We are trying out a new event (hopefully a new annual tradition)! A Festival of Wreaths. This friendly contest allows organizations, businesses, or just groups of friends to get together and design a themed artificial wreath. That wreath will then be hung in our main hallway for 3 weeks, during which time anyone who comes to visit can cast their vote for their favorite. More details on dates in the attached picture.

Everyone gets 1 free vote. You can add votes to your favorite wreath - $1 per vote. The winning wreath will be announced the week of Dec. 22nd via social media and our SCHS website. All proceeds go to SCHS and the winning team (or individual) gets a prize.

We have 10 spots available this year. $25 per entry. To register or if you have any questions, call Lindsay (leave a message if no one answers) at 952-445-0378. All ages are welcome to enter. Your wreath must be artificial, as we are housed in a museum 🙂

Today we are sharing a few of the handbags from our collection for National Handbag Day. From clutches to totes, practical to fashion statement, handbags offer a fun statement to an outfit.

The yellow clutch purse belonged to Verena Mamer Wagner, of New Prague (circa 1925-1935). The white purse with gold swirl designs is from the 1950s and belonged to Ethel Jacobson. The hard-case clutch is from the 1960s, it has a small gold chain that could be attached if desired. Lastly, the decorative beaded small purse with long chain belonged to Cora Coller and was dated to 1925.

Here's what came up when I hit the random object button in our software database. It's a tape measure, but every object has a history. This 50-foot tape measure was used by Frederika and John Woestehoff on their farmstead in Blakeley. The tape measure has a round metal housing painted yellow/gold. The tape itself is fabric printed in black. On the top side of the housing is a metal handle that flips up to open/close. The handle manually rewinds the tape.

Today is National Custodian appreciation day - so we are posting some photos from the collection of school custodians. Most of these come from the yearbooks (and were taken by LeRoy Lebens), except the Belle Plaine School.

Pictures include: Alex Beckius and an unknown man (Shakopee); Earl Casey, Belle Plaine (1955 - the circle photo); Francis Bisek (1968 standing in the hallway); Bob Read (1968, pushing a broom in a gym); Larry Geis (1971 in front of a brick wall).

September 28th marks St Wenceslaus Day, which observes the death of the Duke of Wenceslaus. Historically, one of the large pockets of Czech immigrants moved to the New Prague area - so today we are sharing some photos of today's namesake church. The church (and school) have a long history and are still active today.

The aerial view was taken (according to the notes in the file) circa 1935-1940.
The interior photo was taken by George Mikiska in 2002.

Today is Food Service Workers Day. While this day of appreciation applies to those who work in all realms of food service, we thought we would share some of LeRoy Lebens photos from the Shakopee High School yearbooks of some of the food service workers from the schools. The top photo is from the 1964 yearbook and the bottom one is from the 1958 yearbook.
