We’re kicking off 2026 with a celebration of 100 years of the Mother Road. Our January/February issue is dedicated to exploring the stretch of the historic Route 66 that crosses through Texas—from the small towns of Shamrock to Vega.

“Whether it’s the robust history, the dazzling architecture, or the newer businesses that continue to emerge along the stretch, Route 66 makes you want to hit the road—and just keep going,” writes Paul L. Underwood in “Ride of the Century.”

Just off a slightly less famous highway in Central Texas, Interstate 35, Texas Highways senior writer Ian Dille documents the decades-long rivalry between two mythologized river characters who spend their days at Sewell Park in San Marcos: Frisbee Dan and Sun God.

In the rest of the issue, writer Scott DuBois recommends places to stay in West Texas, and Austin-based writer Jenny Tinghui Zhang reckons with time’s passage along her favorite hiking trail around Town Lake—or Lady Bird Lake, depending on who you ask.
