We Were Never Here by Andrea Bartz is a New York Times bestselling psychological thriller and Reese's Book Club pick published on August 3, 2021.
Best friends Emily and Kristen go on an annual adventure trip together.
During a trip to Chile, Emily returns to their hotel suite to find blood, broken glass, and a dead backpacker. Kristen claims she killed the man in self-defense after he attacked her.
This exact scenario mirrors a fatal incident from their trip the previous year, where Kristen also claimed to kill a man in self-defense to protect Emily.
Back home in Wisconsin, Emily tries to move on and process her trauma. When Kristen makes a surprise visit, Emily begins to question her friend's true motives and confronts their shared, violent past.
