For today’s Fire Prevention Month🚫 🔥 2026 highlight, we’re focusing on 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟯 – 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀, originally built in 1971.

Station 3 operates with a five-person crew responding with 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝟭𝟴𝟳𝟯 🚒 and 𝗠𝗲𝗱 𝟭𝟴𝟱𝟯 🚑 , along with a Battalion Chief who oversees citywide operations each shift. The station also includes administrative offices, the county dive team trailer, support vehicles, and the Survive Alive education trailer.

After more than 𝟱𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀, Station 3 no longer meets modern safety and operational standards. It lacks updated systems, cancer‐risk reduction features, ADA accessibility, and was not designed for co‐ed living or the space required for today’s fire and EMS operations. A 2019 study identified nearly one million dollars in necessary repairs.

To address these needs, staff have been working through a multi‐phase planning and approval process to rebuild Station 3 at the former County Highway Department site. The new headquarters would feature modern living and working areas, properly sized apparatus bays, private bunks, and a dedicated live‐fire training facility—an important addition that fills a significant training gap.

Next steps (following the same timeline as Station 2’s rebuild):
• Bidding anticipated to begin in late winter (pending Council approval)
• Groundbreaking planned for early summer 2027
• Ribbon cutting expected in summer 2028

The Station 3 rebuild is being planned alongside the proposed rebuild of Station 2. Combining both projects is projected to be more cost‐effective and will better support the long‐term public safety needs of the City of Sheboygan.

Follow along throughout Fire Prevention Month as we highlight each SFD station and the dedicated members who serve our community every day.

Week 5 of the Citizens Fire Academy (CFA) had participants experiencing what it really feels like to be in a firefighter’s boots! This week, everyone suited up in full gear — including the air tank (called an SCBA: Self‑Contained Breathing Apparatus) and face mask firefighters use to breathe in smoky or dangerous environments.

Once on air, participants entered a smoke‑filled, room and practiced firefighter search techniques. They worked as a team to locate a “person” just like in a real home search.

They also learned how firefighters rescue a downed firefighter, practicing different carries, drags, and how to share air in an emergency situation.

So many thoughtful questions this week — great job, everyone!

Stop using your device immediately if the battery…
• Smells strange
• Feels warm or hot
• Makes popping or crackling noises
• Changes shape or color
• Shows smoke

If it’s safe, move it away from anything that can catch fire.
A damaged battery can overheat and spark a fire — stay alert and stay safe!

To help guide that conversation, use today’s coloring page or create your own drawing based on your plan.

And remember, today is the final day to pick up any of the three Fire Prevention Week coloring pages, available only at:

The past two weeks of the Citizens Fire Academy gave participants a meaningful, behind-the-scenes look at both fire prevention and technical rescue operations.

🔥Week 3: Fire Prevention
Last week covered building construction types, fire investigations, fire dynamics, fire inspections, and community fire safety. Participants also received hands-on fire extinguisher training—an important real‑world skill that everyone should know how to use safely and confidently. A demonstration using a wooden “dollhouse” helped show how fire can spread based on ventilation reinforcing two important safety reminders:
• Sleep with your bedroom door closed.
• Check that your smoke alarms are working.

🔥Week 4: Technical Rescue
This week students learned about the department’s specialized rescue capabilities, including Hazmat, dive, open water, ice, trench, and rope rescue. The hands‑on portion (always a fan favorite!) gave participants the chance to use vehicle extrication tools (commonly known as the Jaws of Life) to practice how firefighters access a vehicle during an emergency. Thank you to Rescue 1862 for sharing their expertise and guiding this training.

📆Next week, students will suit up in full firefighter gear to navigate a smoke‑filled environment, search for an occupant, and use an SCBA air pack.
