This year’s NC Liver Mush Festival takes place tomorrow, Saturday, October 17, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm in Uptown Shelby!

Stop by our information tables while your kids enjoy games and interactive activities, like our WIC team’s Grow with Us station, where each child can plant their own seeds in a flowerpot to take home. 🌱

We’ll also be staffing the Baby Comfort Station, a comfortable space for nursing moms and parents with little ones to care for their baby’s needs. Thank you to the Cleveland County Chamber for providing the space!

Today is Global Handwashing Day! 🧼

Washing your hands with soap is one of the easiest ways to help prevent the spread of germs and viruses like Flu, RSV and COVID-19.

Follow these 5 easy steps for proper handwashing:

1️⃣ Wet your hands
2️⃣ Apply soap
3️⃣ Scrub for 20 seconds (try singing your ABCs!)
4️⃣ Rinse thoroughly with warm water
5️⃣ Dry your hands

Clean hands help keep our community healthy! 💙

On October 13, 2026, the Cleveland County Health Department was notified of a skunk that tested positive for rabies. This is the twenty-second rabid animal case identified in the county this year. The animal was found on Moriah School Road in Casar.

Any person bitten or exposed to potentially infectious saliva from this animal should contact their healthcare provider or the local health department for a rabies risk assessment. You may contact the Cleveland County Health Department at 980-484-5169 or 980-484-5100.

Rabies occurs throughout North Carolina. Anyone that sees an animal demonstrating unusual behavior should call Cleveland County Animal Services at 704-481-9884.

Rabies is a fatal yet preventable disease if post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is administered. Rabies is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal or via contamination of open wounds or mucus membranes with potentially infectious material such as saliva.

More information on rabies prevention can be found in the full Press Release, available under the “News” tab on our website.
