NASHVILLE — Beginning Oct. 15, Tennesseans must obtain a free burn permit before burning leaves or natural debris or conducting prescribed burns. As wildfire season begins, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry (TDF) encourages residents and visitors to observe National Fire Prevention Week by practicing fire prevention and exercising extra caution when burning outdoors. Tennessee averages about 1,000 wildfires each year, burning approximately 18,000 acres.

“More than 90% of wildfires in Tennessee are caused by human activities, including escaped debris burns,” State Forester Heather Slayton said. “That means individual actions matter – choosing to avoid burning on high fire danger days, getting a burn permit, taking steps to burn safely and staying with your fire until it is completely out can make a meaningful difference in preventing destructive wildfires in our state.”

TDF is Tennessee’s lead wildfire agency and is responsible by law for administering the burn permit system. Burn permits help TDF communicate when and where conditions are safe for burning and are issued only when fire danger is at an acceptable level. When hazardous conditions — such as high winds, very low humidity or extremely dry vegetation and debris — increase wildfire risk, TDF temporarily pauses permit issuance until conditions improve.

There has been a slight adjustment to the venue for next week's Bedford County Battle of The Badges Blood Drive. The blood drive will now be held in Blue Ribbon Circle, rather than in Cooper Steel Arena. It will run from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Donors should enter through the arched Celebration gates on Madison Street.

The blood drive is open to the public, and local emergency service agencies are competing to see how many donors each one can recruit. When you give, you can state which department you want to support.

Brandy's in Wartrace will offer a free drink or dessert to each donor. Glass Hollow Table & Tavern on the square in Shelbyville will offer a free pint of b**r to each donor. Clements Dental will donate $4 per donor to a scholarship fund, and the winning emergency department will get to pick which high school will get to award the scholarship. "Battle of the Badges" T-shirts will be given out while supplies last.

Although walk-ins will be accepted, scheduling your appointment will help minimize your wait time. You can schedule a time by going to https://www.bloodassurance.org/bedfordcobattle2 . Donors must be 17 or older, or 16 with a completed parental permission form.

Blood Assurance provides blood products to numerous hospitals in the area, including Vanderbilt Bedford Hospital, and your donations could save the life of a friend, neighbor or family member. Please support this worthy event!

Bedford County Highway Superintendent Mark Clanton said the bitter cold which will move in tonight will make county roads "almost impassible ... solid sheets of ice" on Monday and Tuesday, and urged citizens to stay off the roads both days.

Even county emergency services will be affected, and response times will be slower than normal as ambulance, fire, and sheriff's department crews navigate the treacherous road conditions.

Citzens are urged to follow all safety procedures regarding auxiliary heaters or other technologies to avoid the risk of fire.

The initial wave of precipitation has passed, but wind and rain tonight could conceivably affect ice-covered trees as the bitter cold sets in, and could create additional power outages.

There have been flooding problems today at locations that are susceptible to water running over the pavement. Bedford County Highway Department crews have been following the situation. Clanton said that the northwestern portion of the county has seen the greatest impact so far.

In preparation for the approaching winter storm, BCFD respectfully advises residents of essential safety precautions to safeguard themselves and their families. NEVER operate generators indoors. ALWAYS position generators and equipment outdoors to ensure proper ventilation of exhaust. NEVER utilize ovens as a heating source for homes. ALWAYS switch off unattended portable heaters (gas and electric) when leaving rooms or sleeping. ALWAYS maintain a safe distance of at least 3 feet between combustible materials and heat sources, including gas fireplaces and heaters. ALWAYS install and regularly test smoke alarms and CO detectors to verify they are properly functioning.
