2026, A New Chapter in Technical Rescue for Shelbyville Fire & Rescue

2026 marks a significant year in advancing our technical rescue capabilities and we would like to thank Sgt. David Tidei and Sgt. Craig Cottongim as the first two members to earn their certification as structural collapse specialist.

As the primary fire response agency for the City of Shelbyville during natural disasters and other emergencies, we are taking proactive steps to strengthen our ability to respond when our community faces its most challenging situations.

This year, and continuing over the next several years, Shelbyville Fire & Rescue will invest in advanced structural collapse training by sending members to a renowned technical rescue training program in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Through this program, our firefighters will develop specialized knowledge and skills to become Structural Collapse Specialists, better preparing them to operate in complex, high-risk environments where buildings or other structures have failed.

The importance of this training extends beyond large-scale disasters. Kentucky is no stranger to severe weather, including tornadoes, damaging winds, ice storms, and other events capable of compromising structural integrity. Our geographical location near the New Madrid and Wabash Valley seismic zones also makes earthquake preparedness an important consideration. While major seismic events are uncommon, understanding the potential risks associated with living in a region influenced by active fault systems is an essential part of responsible emergency planning.

Structural collapse incidents can also occur during everyday emergencies, including vehicle collisions involving buildings, structural failures, and other incidents that leave occupants trapped beneath debris or within compromised structures.

When these events occur, the ability to recognize structural hazards, assess building stability, manage risk, and perform technically sound rescues can make a life-changing difference. These operations demand specialized training, disciplined decision-making, and a commitment to continuous development.

This investment is about preparing before the emergency happens. By developing these capabilities over the coming years, we are building a stronger technical rescue program, expanding the expertise of our members, and reinforcing our commitment to the people we serve.

At Shelbyville Fire & Rescue, our mission remains clear: Duty, Respect, and Integrity. We will continue investing in our people, strengthening our capabilities, and preparing for the emergencies our community may one day face.

The E-ONE HP78 is underway and taking shape for Shelbyville Fire & Rescue!

We’re excited to watch our newest aerial apparatus come together and are grateful for the continued support of our community and City Council as they consider investing in the infrastructure and equipment necessary to provide a component of effective public service.

This new quint represents a significant investment in our department and will replace a nearly 30-year-old quint that has served the City of Shelbyville well. While we recognize the importance of investing in modern, reliable equipment, we also understand our responsibility to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars.

Through proactive maintenance programs, aggressive upkeep, and strategic refurbishment at appropriate service-life benchmarks, we strive to extend the life of our apparatus, maximize the value of every investment, and help minimize the long-term financial burden on our citizens.

We look forward to welcoming this apparatus to Shelbyville and continuing our commitment to providing our community with the equipment and resources our firefighters need to serve you effectively.

We can’t wait to welcome everyone to the official push-in ceremony when the HP78 arrives!

Structure Fire – October 17, 2026

Shortly after 1:00 a.m. on October 17, Shelbyville Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a fire involving a three-story structure, approximately 5,000 square feet in size. The fire was discovered by Shelby County EMS personnel as they were clearing from another call.

Shelbyville Fire Engine 12 and Engine 32 arrived within minutes and quickly contained the fire due in part to the location of the fire within the structure. Members of the Shelby County Fire Department arrived afterward to assist with continued operations, followed by support from the Simpsonville Fire Department.

Our thoughts are with the Andriot family as they navigate the aftermath of this incident. They have invested an incredible amount of time, hard work, and heart into renovating this property and contributing to the growth of Shelbyville. We sincerely regret the damage and loss they have experienced and recognize the tremendous effort they have put into this project.

Some time was spent today during beautiful weather exploring vector forces, craning versus high D’s, mechanical advantage, and ways to minimize torsional and rotational forces while using aerial apparatus. With aerials already operating within narrow stability and safety margins, understanding that additional application of forces is critical.

As the photos suggest, some of us rigged and others just hung out 🤷🏼‍♂️

Help us congratulate Captain Woods, Sergeant Horn, and Firefighter Konak who just completed a demanding week of Honor Guard training with the Kentucky State Police at Trooper Island.

An Honor Guard represents the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, respect, and service. Whether honoring a fallen firefighter, participating in memorial services, or representing our department at special ceremonies, these members will carry forward the traditions and values of the fire service.

This marks the beginning of the first Honor Guard for Shelbyville Fire & Rescue, laying the foundation for a proud tradition that will serve our department and community for years to come.

We are proud of these members for their dedication and commitment to building something meaningful for the future of our department.
