At 5:06 Sheldon Fire was paged to 1500 RMT Ave Kent Feeds for the report of an explosion in the feed mill near door #9. On arrival firefighters met with employees on site and could see visible damage to the east side of the tower in the north part of the facility. At that time employees and firefighters shut down the utilities to that part of the facility.
Sheldon Fire requested O’Brien County EMA to respond to the scene with their drone to check for any hot spots in that area of the facility. Once on scene the drone was deployed to check hotspots and for the extent of damage, nothing of concern was found in the facility.
The cause of the incident appears to be accidental in nature as employees stated that they were in the process of starting up the grain dryer up for daily operations when the explosion happened.
Sheldon Fire was assisted on by Sheldon Police, O’Brien County EMA, O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, and employees of Kent Feeds.

Today firefighters had extrication training along side Archer Fire, Boyden Fire, and Hospers Fire. Training like this helps us sharpen and learn new skills as well as getting to work with our neighboring departments.

Thank you to Danko Emergency Equipment Company, TNT Rescue Systems, Heiman Fire Equipment, and Genesis Rescue Systems for provide the equipment demo and training.

Also thank you to Tim Miller with T&C Salvage for providing cars to train with.

Today our firefighters tested all of our attack and supply hoses. This helps to insure that they will withstand working pressure during an emergency and is a NFPA requirement.

We even had a young man stop by who dreams of someday becoming a firefighter.

Public Notice

Sheldon Fire Company will be doing its annual hose testing on Saturday, September 12th. We will be starting at 7am lasting until mid-afternoon. This is a NFPA requirement that we pressure test our fire hoses annually.
We want citizens to be aware that there could be some discoloration in the water system during this time. Please use caution when washing white or delicate clothing items.
Also use caution when driving in the area of the Fire Station.
