🚒 Sheldon Fire Department

The Wisconsin DNR has classified Rusk County as HIGH FIRE DANGER, and a burning ban is in effect today!

🌡️ With temperatures expected to reach 84°F, abundant sunshine, breezy conditions, and very little chance of rain, conditions are favorable for wildfires to start and spread quickly.

🍂 Dry grass, fallen leaves, and other vegetation can ignite from even a small spark.

🚫 NO OUTDOOR BURNING! Please comply with all DNR burning restrictions in effect today.

⚠️ Use extra caution with lawn equipment, ATVs, chainsaws, and anything that could produce sparks.

🔥 One spark is all it takes! Help us protect our homes, property, and community.

As Fire Prevention Week comes to a close, the Sheldon Fire Department wants to thank everyone who followed along, shared our posts, and took time this week to learn more about lithium-ion battery and charging safety.
⚡ “Charge Into Fire Safety™. Safe Charging Is a Superpower.” ⚡
The lessons from Fire Prevention Week shouldn't end today. Keep practicing safe charging habits throughout the year—and don't forget the basics of home fire safety:
🚨 Maintain working smoke alarms throughout your home.
🧪 Test your smoke alarms regularly.
🏠 Have a home fire escape plan and make sure everyone knows it.
🚪 Practice your escape plan with the entire family.
🔋 Stop using batteries that become unusually hot, swell, leak, smoke, smell unusual, or make popping or hissing sounds.
⚡ Continue using safe charging practices every day.
Fire prevention is a year-round responsibility. Small safety habits can make a big difference in protecting your home and family.
From all of us at the Sheldon Fire Department, thank you for helping make our community safer! ❤️🚒

🔥⚡ FIRE PREVENTION WEEK — DAY 6 ⚡🔥
🔌 UNPLUG WHEN CHARGED!
When your device is fully charged, unplug it.
For larger lithium-ion battery-powered equipment—such as e-bikes, e-scooters, and power tools—take a few extra precautions:
🔋 Unplug the device when charging is complete.
🚪 Never block an exit with a charging device or battery.
🔥 Keep batteries and charging equipment away from combustible materials.
🏠 Charge larger battery-powered equipment outside when appropriate and when the manufacturer allows it.
📖 Always follow the manufacturer's charging and storage instructions.
And remember: Never charge an e-bike or other large battery-powered device where it could prevent you from escaping during a fire.
A few simple charging habits can make your home safer.

🔥⚡ FIRE PREVENTION WEEK — DAY 5 ⚡🔥
🚨 KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS!
Lithium-ion batteries can sometimes give you warning signs before they fail.
STOP USING a battery or device if you notice:
🌡️ It becomes unusually HOT
🔋 The battery SWELLS or changes shape
👃 An unusual ODOR
💧 LEAKING
💨 SMOKE
👂 POPPING or HISSING sounds
⚠️ Don't ignore these warning signs.
If something doesn't look, smell, sound, or feel right with a rechargeable battery or device, stop using it.
Knowing the warning signs could help prevent a battery fire in your home.

🔥⚡ FIRE PREVENTION WEEK — DAY 4 ⚡🔥
⚡ CHARGE SMART!
Where you charge your phone, tablet, laptop, or other rechargeable device matters.
Always charge devices on a hard, flat surface where heat can escape.
🛏️ DON'T charge devices on beds.
🛋️ DON'T charge them on couches or upholstered furniture.
😴 DON'T place a charging device underneath a pillow or blanket.
🔥 Keep chargers and devices away from anything that can burn.
✅ A table, desk, counter, or other hard surface is a safer choice.
Batteries can generate heat while charging. Soft materials can trap that heat and increase the risk of a fire.
Before you plug it in, think about where you're charging it.

🔌 USE THE RIGHT CHARGER!
That charging cord in the junk drawer might fit your device—but that doesn't necessarily mean you should use it.
The Sheldon Fire Department reminds everyone to use the charging cord and equipment supplied with your device or a replacement specifically approved by the manufacturer.
⚡ Use the charger designed for your device.
🔌 Replace damaged or frayed charging cords.
🚫 Avoid questionable or off-brand chargers.
📖 Follow the manufacturer's charging instructions.
🔋 Never modify batteries, chargers, or charging equipment.
Using the proper equipment is an easy step you can take to help prevent battery fires.

🔥⚡ FIRE PREVENTION WEEK — DAY 2 ⚡🔥

Today’s fire safety message from the Sheldon Fire Department is simple:

🔍 LOOK FOR THE LABEL!

When purchasing rechargeable devices, batteries, and charging equipment, look for products that have been tested and certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.

You may see labels such as UL, ETL, or CSA on tested products. These markings help indicate that the product has been evaluated for safety.

⚡ Choose quality products from reputable manufacturers.
🔋 Check for a recognized safety certification.
🚫 Be cautious of questionable or counterfeit batteries and charging equipment.
📖 Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Before you buy it, look for the label!

🔥⚡ FIRE PREVENTION WEEK STARTS TODAY! ⚡🔥
October 4–10 is Fire Prevention Week 2026, and this year’s theme is:
⚡ “Charge Into Fire Safety™. Safe Charging Is a Superpower.” ⚡
Lithium-ion batteries power many of the things we use every day—from phones and tablets to power tools, e-bikes, and other rechargeable devices. When batteries or chargers are damaged, improperly used, or charged in unsafe locations, they can create a serious fire hazard.
Throughout Fire Prevention Week, the Sheldon Fire Department will be sharing a different safety tip each day to help you and your family charge safely.
🔋 Use the charger designed for your device.
🔌 Check cords and chargers for damage.
🛏️ Never charge devices on beds, pillows, or couches.
👀 Keep an eye on devices while they're charging.
🔥 Keep charging devices away from anything that can burn.
Follow along with us all week and help spread the word by sharing our daily posts!
