I had someone ask me about the SSD mailer that went out a couple weeks ago, why some of the policies have such ideological language.
If you look at districts across the state, you will see they all have virtually the same exact policy. Why? Its a top down push from the state.
The way it works is the state passes a law, then WSSDA has a team that creates a policy that complies with the new law. That is then distributed to all school districts for adoption. Each district can choose to adopt, amend, or deny the policy change but knows the state will be after them if they dont comply.
I support these initiatives to push back against the ideologically driven nonsense and actions taken in direct opposition to voters will.

My heart goes out to the victims and their families of the car crash yesterday. This is every parents nightmare. Please reach out to someone if you need help coping with grief.
Ive seen several posts from people wanting to support the families, and that is what makes our community great.
Ive just learned that the boy who was put on life support is recovering and will not need the life support soon!

My son and I visited the SHS pool this past Sunday. It was my first time there in 6 years. The renovations(from a few years ago) on the pools are nice and make the pool edge less slippery. I still miss the old high dive platforms.
I am still not a fan of the Y having sole control of the pool outside of school hours. We need to go back to our swim staff and students offering open swims and swim classes. These programs pay for themselves with admission prices.

Once again Im volunteering with the 'Wheels for Hope' car show. Tomorrow 9 - 3 in downtown Shelton. This is the same group that gives a ride to our Cedar High School graduates up to their graduation ceremony.

Stop by the kids area to say hi or chat, and of course enjoy all the beautiful hotrods.

I received a phone call from Mason County Clerk Charles Rhodes a couple weeks ago. He was concerned and wanted the board and district to be aware that there has been a noticeable uptick in protective orders between students this year.
Do you think this is a reflection of the times, with parents interjecting and being more protective of their kids? Or could this be a reflection of the districts seeming decline in discipline and in their own words, "no longer using the suspension model"?

Tonight's award ceremony: over $500,000 in scholarships to our graduating class, and thats not including the students who got full ride scholarships or all the students taking advantage of the Shelton Promise program.
It was my honor to award the Drake scholarship to our top 5 outstanding applicants.

Forest Fest weekend! My favorite community event of the year.
Find me to chat and tell me your thoughts and concerns. I always watch the parade at 4th & Railroad by the flower shop. I'll be at the logging show at Loop field later that day, and I'll be attending the car show Sunday afternoon.

Tonight, the board interviewed the top 5 candidates for the Drake Scholarship. All five students presented themselves wonderfully. They each already embody hard working, community serving, success stories. I know that each of them will thrive where life takes them.
Seeing these excellent students with their bright eyes and energy, right before they tackle the real world head on, is invigorating!

On Friday I was invited, along with many other community members, to provide a listening ear to 1st graders showcasing their reading and writing skills. I heard personal letters, poems, and a great book about dinosaurs. I was impressed not only by their skills but their willingness to do so in front of people!
Thanks to Mrs Munro at MTV for having me.

At the previous meeting, the district made that case that due to decreased enrollment and the continuing decline in birth rates, not to mention the decline in support from the state in several areas, that a gradual reduction in staffing would be necessary to stay within our budget.
Ive received at least a dozen emails with concerns about another reduction in force. Last year was rough to say the least, and I wasnt on the board yet.
I share your concerns. I dont want less opportunities for our students or larger class sizes. However, one of my primary goals is to get the district in a better financial position. By the end of this year we will be in the black if things continue, but not by much.
