Like most of you, I am aware of the situation involving the gas leak on FM 1127. First and foremost, I want to express my sincere appreciation to our EMS personnel, First Responders, Firefighters, Sheriff’s Office Deputies, and everyone else who stepped up to help during this incident. Their efforts helped keep our community safe during a difficult situation.
I was personally on site, assisting with escorting residents through a private property access route that the landowner graciously allowed us to use so people would not be trapped in or blocked from accessing FM 1127.
Unfortunately, I am saddened and disappointed to report that the generosity shown by Mrs. Annie Shrieve, owner of the Ranch Road, was met with a level of disrespect that should concern all of us. After allowing the public to use her property during this emergency, large amounts of trash were left behind. What was intended, a neighbor helping neighbors, became a cleanup project for someone who was simply trying to do the right thing.
It is very likely that this incident has damaged the trust that made this accommodation possible in the first place, and I cannot blame the property owner for reconsidering future request to use her land.
As a community, we can and should do better. When someone opens their property to help their neighbors during an emergency, the least we can do is treat the property with the same respect we would want shown to our own.
Thank you again to all of the emergency personnel who assisted throughout this event, and please remember that our actions today determine whether people will be willing to help tomorrow.

Commissioner Donny Marrs
