🚲🛴 HEY, SHINER! LET'S TALK ROAD SAFETY! ⚡🚦

We love seeing our kids outside, enjoying the fresh air, riding bikes, and having fun with their friends! ❤️ There’s nothing wrong with getting outside and enjoying the day!

Recently, the Shiner Police Department has received some complaints and noticed more of our youth riding bicycles, scooters, electric bicycles, and electric scooters on public roadways. We want everyone to have fun, but we also want our kids to get home safely!

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Parents, this is a great opportunity to have a quick safety talk with your kids!

Here are a few important reminders for our young riders:
🚴 Wear a helmet! It may not be the coolest accessory, but protecting your head is always in style!

🛑 Know the rules of the road! Stop at stop signs, obey traffic signals, and follow the rules that apply to your ride.

👀 Stay alert! Watch for cars, pedestrians, and other riders. Remember, drivers may not always see you!

📵 Put distractions away! Keep your phone down and pay attention to what's happening around you.

💡 Be seen! Use the required lights and reflectors, especially when riding in low-light conditions.

⚡ Know your ride! Electric bikes and scooters can move faster than you think. Make sure you know how to operate yours safely and understand the rules that apply.

🤝 Be respectful! Share the road, look out for others, and never take unnecessary risks just to show off for friends.

❤️ A MESSAGE TO OUR PARENTS: Please talk with your children about where they can ride safely and legally, the importance of following traffic laws, and the dangers of riding carelessly around moving vehicles.

Our goal isn't to keep our kids from having fun. We want them to enjoy being outdoors, make great memories, and most importantly, stay safe!

📣 LET'S HEAR FROM OUR SHINER FAMILIES!
Parents, what's one safety rule you always remind your kids about before they head outside? Share it in the comments! Let's help each other keep our kids safe.

Please help us spread the word by sharing this post with other Shiner families!

Stay safe, look out for one another, and let's keep Shiner a great place to grow up! 💙

SUCCESS!!! This year's SHINER NIGHT OUT was outstanding! The community came together and all had a great time. Local businesses and organizations really stepped up their game this year to make this the best SHINER NIGHT OUT ever! Mother Nature also blessed us with nice weather. ☺️ A HUGE THANK YOU to all of the Sponsors and our community members and partners that participated and treated everyone with good food, music, and entertainment for the children. The Shiner Police Department would also like to recognize Captain Chris Kalina for his outstanding efforts to organize the event as he has been doing for the past few years and it just keeps getting better. Thank you to Officer William Miller for conducting the hayrides for the kiddos and Animal Control Officer Mike Mendoza for finding good homes for a dozen cute kittens. We're already looking forward to next year! 😃

Child Passenger Safety Week Sept 20-26. Please do your part to keep our children safe.

This Week is Child Passenger Safety Week | September 20-26

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is reminding all Texans to ensure that your child is properly secured in your vehicle.

Even if it’s just driving one block away, making sure your child is buckled up can make a huge difference in the event of an accident.

Here are some tips you should follow:

- Select a properly fitting car seat.
- Avoid purchasing a car seat where you’re not able to verify its history.
- Check the maximum height and weight limits of the car seat.

Learn all the best child passenger safety practices to keep our youngest Texans safe.

**IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR PEDESTRIANS WALKING AT NIGHT**

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), roughly 75% of pedestrian fatalities occur after dark. Because limited visibility, driver fatigue, and distractions significantly spike during evening hours, keeping people safe requires everyone to be vigilant and aware.

Walking at night in dark clothing places pedestrians at extreme risk because they are essentially invisible to approaching drivers until it is too late! We have been receiving reports of too many close calls, so we are asking pedestrians to please take common sense measures to protect themselves.

How to Stay Safe:

Dress brightly:
Wear light-bright colored clothing or apparel featuring retro-reflective materials.

Carry a light:
Hold a flashlight or turn on your phone's flashlight feature to signal your presence from a distance.

Assume you are invisible:
Never assume a driver sees you. Wait for a vehicle to come to a complete stop and make eye contact before crossing.

Walk facing traffic:
Always use sidewalks. If none are available, walk on the shoulder facing oncoming traffic so you can see vehicles approaching.

Ditch the distractions:
Keep your eyes off your phone and take off headphones so you can actively listen for traffic cues.

Stick to marked crossings:
Cross strictly at well-lit, designated crosswalks or intersections where drivers naturally expect to see pedestrians.

Tips for Motorists: Exercise caution when driving during hours of darkness and keep an eye out for pedestrians walking, especially in areas near city parks.

Today, September 11, 2026, marks the 25th anniversary of the deadliest terrorist attacks on American soil. A quarter of a century later, the nation is gathering at Ground Zero in New York, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to honor the 2,977 innocent lives lost on that fateful day in 2001.
