🚨50 YEARS OF SERVICE🚨

Last evening, we celebrated Sue Fisher and her 50 years of service to the Shippensburg Fire Department!

Sue joined the West End Fire and Rescue Company in April of 1976 as a junior member, becoming the company's first female firefighter and becoming a life member. She later earned her EMT certification in 1977.

She later joined Cumberland Valley Hose Company #2 as a volunteer and a career EMT, serving as Ambulance Captain, and Assistant Ambulance Chief and also became a life member.

In her time, she has received numerous honors, including being named Franklin County and Pennsylvania State EMT of the Year.

Always staying busy, Sue held many positions at West End, including Secretary, Vice-President, and Chair of the Board. Also, she's served on various committees, including the Franklin County Emergency Services Council, and has taught EMT and CPR courses throughout her career.

A state-certified coroner and nationally certified medicolegal death investigator, Sue officially retired this past March as Deputy Coroner of Franklin County.

Sue is a sterling example of the most cherished traditions of duty, sacrifice and citizenship.

Last evening, Sue was presented with a plaque celebrating her 50 years of service, as well as a proclamation from the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives.

Please join us in congratulating Sue on 50 years of service!!

REST IN PEACE, CHIEF WIESTLING

Last evening, the West End Membership learned that long time Fire Chief, Crawford Wiestling, had passed away.

Chief Wiestling was first voted into the company in April 29, 1957. It didn't take long for him to move through the ranks, as he was appointed to the "new" 3rd Assistant's Fire Chief's position in May of 1962 and then was elected as the companies 2nd Fire Chief in November, 1964.

He then helped the company start assisting other local department's with calls within Southampton Twp, as well as the turnpike, stating "Our members are vitally interested in rescue work and we believe we can offer an excellent service to the turnpike commission."

At the February meeting in 1968, Crawford was named the Fire Chief for Southampton Twp., Franklin County to formally establish the chain of command at fires within the township before resigning in 1973 to move away and become the Director of Public Safety in the City of Lock Haven.

Chief Wiestling played an crucial part in expanding the company and moving the department location from the ally (Kuhn Ave.) to where we sit today at 49 Lurgan Ave.

At one point, he even donated his '69 Plymouth Fury station wagon as the first station chief's vehicle.

He would eventually move back to Shippensburg, and in 1974, Chief Wiestling was appointed the acting Boro Fire Chief, taking over for company charter member and first fire chief Robert Jones. He would serve in this position until 1977, when he resigned to take a job as a fire investigator out of the area. In his letter of resignation, Chief wrote:

"I have totally enjoyed working with you and all the members of the company over the past years. We have had our good times and bad times, but our open communications and willingness to work together in the name of the West End Fire and Rescue Company has proven to be totally successful in all our activities."

The list of accomplishments goes on and on, but we here at West End will remember him as a leader, a visionary, and a mentor. West End would not be the company we are today, without his early leadership and dedication.

As West End's 2nd Fire Chief, he led the organization through it's formative years. Under his leadership, our organization became one of the most progressive and professionally managed volunteer fire companies in the Commonwealth of PA, something we maintain and strive for yet today.

Rest In Peace Chief. We'll see you on the fire floor.

🚨🚨 RESCUE COMPANY PULLS 1 FROM WATER 🚨🚨

On Monday, Oct 19th, at 1627hrs, Rescue 15 was alerted to assist Vigilant Hose Company #1 with a water rescue at 49 Lantern Ln, in Southampton Twp., Cumberland County.

Rescue 15 with a staffing of 7 and Engine 252 with staffing of 5 responded quickly to the scene.

Upon arrival of a firefighter from Co. 52, they advised one vehicle in the water, with a female standing on top of the rear end of the vehicle. Upon arrival of Engine 252, with quick thinking of the engine officer, they advised everyone to stay clear of the edge of the water, giving the rescue room to set up and work.

At the request of the Co. 52 firefighter on scene, Chief 152 who was still enroute requested Tower 15, for use of the bucket, to try and rescue the victim off the vehicle that way.

Upon receiving the initial information from county, 3 personnel began to dress into dry suits to prepare for a potential rescue. Rescue 15, Car 15, and Car 15-2 all arrived on scene, and immediately proceeded to the waters edge, finding one victim, approximately 60ft from the waters edge, in the middle of the pond. Crews threw a rescue rope and were in process of getting a PFD to the victim, when she appeared to lose her footing. Seeing this, 3 suited personnel from the rescue company were ordered to retrieve the victim. Without hesitating, the group of 3 entered the water, and swam to the victim.

Upon rescue swimmer contact with the victim, she was supported by the swimmers and removed from the water to awaiting EMS.

Without quick thinking of the first arriving officers, the rescue officers, and the rescue group, the outcome could've been different.

Great job to all who responded to yesterdays incident.

A little Sunday training never hurt anyone. This afternoon, on station personnel broke into two groups to get some hands-on refreshers of ropes and rigging, as well as the air cart, air bag, and it's system.

Our members pride themselves in refreshing on items we don't use often, to maintain a level of knowledge for when we are called to use them in real world scenarios.
