🎀 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🎀
This month, we come together as a community to honor survivors, support those currently fighting, and remember the loved ones we’ve lost. Breast cancer affects millions of families, and raising awareness truly saves lives through early detection, education, and support.
While breast cancer impacts people from all walks of life, studies show that certain groups—including female firefighters—face a higher risk due to occupational exposure to harmful chemicals.
💗 How our community can take action this month:
• Encourage regular screenings and mammograms
• Wear pink to show your support
• Share awareness resources with friends and family
• Support local breast cancer organizations and events
Together, we stand strong in raising awareness, supporting one another, and working toward a future with fewer lives impacted by breast cancer.

We wrapped up Fire Prevention Week Friday after a busy and rewarding week of school visits throughout our community! We educated over 300 students!
Our crews spent time teaching students about fire safety (crawl low under smoke), showing them what firefighters look and sound like in full gear, and giving an up‑close tour of our fire engines and the equipment we use every day.
Most importantly, we had a great time connecting with so many students and teachers. Their excitement and curiosity made each visit special.
A huge thank you to all the schools that welcomed us and helped make this year’s Fire Prevention Week another great success! 🔥🚒👩‍🚒

Special thanks to Laarnie Soma Agency with State Farm Insurance for donating a great education kit for our schools!

🔥 Fire Prevention Week! 🔋
When your device isn’t in use, do you keep it plugged in?
Should you?
It’s safer not to keep devices plugged in once they’re fully charged.
Overcharging can stress lithium‑ion batteries, create excess heat, and increase the risk of failure.
Unplug when you’re done—protect your device and your home!

🔥 Lithium‑Ion Battery Safety Reminder! 🔋
Is it safe to leave electronics with lithium‑ion batteries in the car?
Not really. These batteries don’t do well in high heat. Temperatures inside a vehicle can climb fast, increasing the risk of battery damage or even fire.
Take them out! Don’t leave phones, tablets, power banks, e‑bikes, or other battery‑powered devices in hot spaces.
And remember:
If your device is fully charged, UNPLUG it!
Overcharging or keeping devices plugged in unnecessarily can shorten battery life and increase risk.
Stay tuned for more Fire Prevention Week tips!

🔋 Where do you charge your devices? How long do you charge them?
It matters—for your safety and the safety of others!
Lithium‑ion batteries are everywhere, but using them safely starts with good charging habits.

🔥 Stage 2 Burn Ban Lifted 🔥

Thanks to cooler weather and recent rain, local wildland fire danger has decreased.
All properly regulated fires may now resume.
Recreational campfires and fire pits are allowed again!

Reminder: If your fire pit is creating unhealthy smoke for a neighbor, you might be required to extinguish it.
Stay safe and burn responsibly. 🌲🔥

As we wrap up National Child Passenger Safety Week, here are a few important questions to think about:
• Are your children no longer in car seats?
• Should they be?
• If your child is two years old, should you turn them forward‑facing?
That last one is a trick question. Washington law says you can turn them forward‑facing at age two—but we recommend keeping children rear‑facing as long as their convertible car seat allows for their height and weight. Rear‑facing offers the best protection for their neck and spine, and kids are perfectly safe sitting with crossed or bent legs.
If you have more questions or want to make sure your child is in the right seat, visit the NHTSA’s resource here:
https://www.nhtsa.gov/campaign/right-seat
And if you live in Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, or Woodway, you can request an appointment with us to double‑check your car seat installation and child placement:

Keeping our youngest passengers safe is always worth the extra minute. 💙🚗👶

Yesterday afternoon, our crews were dispatched to reports of smoke in an apartment building in the 1100 block of N 200 St. in Shoreline. They arrived to find smoke coming from the laundry room with an unknown source. As the wall was opened up, it was discovered that fire was traveling upward through the wall and across the ceiling. The call was upgraded to a working fire, and firefighters quickly opened the ceiling and extinguished the fire.
One apartment above the laundry room was impacted, and property management assisted the resident. No injuries were reported. The fire originated from ducting connected to the laundry room.
This serves as an important reminder to check both your dryer’s internal lint cleanout and the ductwork that vents to the outside. A little maintenance can prevent a much bigger emergency.
Great quick stop by our crews—this could have been much worse!
