Last year during Disability Awareness Month, we brought you this video of the Unified PE class being piloted at Einstein Middle School.

One year later, we're thrilled to share that the class continues at Einstein this fall and is going strong, offering an opportunity for students of all abilities to play, learn, and lead together. This program reflects our Envision Shoreline strategic plan focus areas: Every Student Supported and Each Student Thriving.

Watch how students are building fitness, confidence, and friendships!

During Disability Awareness Month, we take time to learn and reflect on how the words we use shape inclusion and respect.

Person-first language puts the person before the disability, emphasizing that disability is only one aspect of who they are.

βœ… Examples:
β€œStudent with a disability”
β€œPerson who uses a wheelchair”
β€œChild with autism”

Identity-first language centers the disability as an important and valued part of a person’s identity. Many people in disability communities prefer this phrasing because it reflects pride and belonging.
βœ… Examples:
β€œAutistic person”
β€œBlind person”
β€œDeaf student”

Deficit-Based Language focuses on what someone β€œlacks” or frames disability negatively. This language can be harmful and should be avoided.
🚫 Examples:
β€œSuffers from autism”
β€œConfined to a wheelchair”
β€œHandicapped person”

The most important thing? Ask and honor each person’s preference. Language is personal, and showing respect for how someone chooses to describe themselves is a meaningful act of inclusion.

πŸ’™ This Disability Awareness month, we celebrate the Shoreline Special Education PTSA!

Since 2013, this dedicated group of caregivers has been building community and advocating for equitable, inclusive education for all Shoreline students. Their mission? To build community within and between student groups, caregivers and staff, and to advocate for special education students and for equitable, inclusive education for all.

Through IEP support, guest speaker meetings, caregiver check-ins, and their Annual Outstanding Educators Awards, the Shoreline Special Education PTSA continues to grow connection, awareness, and collaboration across our school community.

Want to get involved? Visit shorelineseptsa.org

2026-27 membership is open, and their first caregiver support meeting is coming up on October 21.

Thank you for everything you do to support Shoreline students and families! πŸ’™

Last Thursday, Shorewood High School's ASB hosted a Club Fair during lunch to help students find their people and get involved on campus, and the turnout exceeded expectations! Over 50 clubs and interest groups showed up, spanning sports, community service, culture and heritage, and activism, giving students tons of ways to connect, explore new interests, and build community.

Student leaders reported going through multiple sign-up sheets as students lined up to join. A huge thank you to the leaders of ASB and all the clubs who made this event possible for our Stormrays! πŸ’™πŸ’š
