Milwaukee County Transit System Forward Survey Deadline Monday, October 26

The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) is currently engaging Milwaukee County residents with its MCTS Forward project. MCTS Forward is a collaborative effort to plan the future of public transit in the county amid projected budget shortfalls. MCTS is asking the community to weigh in on two conceptual approaches to a potential 25% service reduction.

The Ridership concept would offer fewer routes with more frequent service, while the Coverage concept would maintain service across more areas with less frequency. These are conceptual approaches – not final plans – and community input will help inform decisions about the future of public transportation. The concepts illustrate different tradeoffs, and community feedback received about them will help inform MCTS and the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors as they determine future transit priorities this winter. Public input on the draft plan is scheduled to be completed next spring.

How to participate:
- Review the two concepts
- Complete the public survey (https://03e638nkmcf.typeform.com/MCTSForward)
- Attend an MCTS Forward open house
- Meet MCTS staff at community events throughout the County

Whether you ride the bus, drive, work, own a business or simply care about transportation in Milwaukee County, your voice matters. Learn more, take the survey and find upcoming community events at www.RideMCTS.com/MCTSForward.

Oakland Avenue Traffic Shift

Late next week, the Oakland Avenue Project is scheduled to enter its third and final phase of construction. Work will include completing sidewalk repairs on the east side of Oakland Avenue, installing northbound curb extensions, completing final asphalt paving, and project-wide landscape restoration.

During this phase, northbound and southbound traffic will be shifted to their permanent travel lanes. Parking lanes on both sides of Oakland Avenue will remain closed until crews complete the remaining work.

Streets west of Oakland Avenue are scheduled to reopen in this phase. However, temporary closures of streets on both sides of Oakland Avenue may be necessary to complete curb extensions, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) curb ramps, traffic signal work, paving, and restoration. Motorists are reminded to drive slowly and be alert to changes in traffic patterns when traveling through the area.

This work is expected to continue until early December. For more updates on the project, please visit: https://oaklandavereconstruct.com/

Please consider joining us on Saturday, November 7 for one of Shorewood's favorite events, the annual fall yard clean-up.

Volunteers help older and disabled neighbors with light yard work. It's a great way for families, students (anyone!) to connect with neighbors and to give back to the community. No job takes more than 3 hours. Volunteers get a free t-shirt, a donut and a Culver's coupon. NHS students earn volunteer hours.

Village Clerk Toya Harrell to Speak at Shorewood Men's Club Tonight

At the next SMC meeting on Wednesday, October 21, Shorewood Village Clerk Toya Harrell will be speaking on Elections, Integrity & Trust.

Come and learn what it takes to put on an election in Shorewood, and what safeguards are in place to ensure that election fraud or abuse does not occur. And hear the important role that citizen volunteers play in the process. SMC’s speaker events are open to everyone and are held on the first and third Wednesday of each month at Hubbard Park Lodge.

Meetings start at 6:00 (drinks 6:00, dinner 6:30, speaker 7:00). There is no charge for those who desire to attend at 7:00 just to hear a scheduled speaker. Those who also would like to dine with us that evening should visit the SMC website (https://www.shorewoodmensclub.org/upcoming-events) to make a dinner reservation (dinner is just $23).

The SMC seeks to be Shorewood’s premier public forum for engaging topics and speakers representing a variety of perspectives. By hosting such speakers, the SMC seeks to enrich our community and build community connections.

Fall in Wisconsin means playoff baseball, football, pumpkin spice everything and ... leaf collection. The program starts today!

When will my leaves be collected?
The Village Code sets a leaf collection schedule that begins on the third Monday of October. The Village is divided into five areas, each of which have leaf collection on a specific day of the week. Please view or download the schedule here (https://www.villageofshorewood.org/DocumentCenter/View/2257). Leaves must be raked or moved to the collection point by 6:30 a.m. on collection day. To maintain the expected schedule for everyone, our crews cannot “back track” to streets or blocks that have already been serviced for leaf piles that were put out later in the day.

How are leaves collected in Shorewood?
Shorewood uses specialized leaf vacuum trucks to collect leaves from the parkway (terrace) areas (located between the sidewalk and the curb). A street sweeper later follows the vac truck to remove any leaves that may have fallen into the street. Please DO NOT place your leaf piles in the roadway or instruct your contractors to do so.

Is that different from neighboring communities?
Shorewood’s leaf collection process varies from neighboring communities. Milwaukee and Whitefish Bay utilize a “push” or “load” method – residents place leaves in the street and municipal staff use various pieces of equipment to either push leaves directly into the back of a rear loading garbage truck or use loaders to move leaves into waiting dump trucks. Shorewood may use a similar method, if needed, in cases of unusual circumstances.

Why do we do it this way?
Shorewood’s collection method offers a level of service that is much higher than other area communities who do not guarantee collection days or dates. Keeping leaves out of the street has significant water quality benefits, reduces the risk of street flooding and lessens parking impacts. Our standard collection method uses fewer pieces of equipment so is more fuel and labor efficient.

Can I put branches and pumpkins in my leaf pile?
No! The vacuums are designed for leaves; other materials will clog and potentially damage the machines, causing collection delays and significant expense.

Can I use my yard waste cart for leaves?
Yes please! These leaves will be collected on your regular yard waste/refuse collection day (https://www.villageofshorewood.org/1121/Collection-Schedules) through the end of November. Yard waste carts can be purchased at the Village Hall.
