At approximately 8:20 am this morning the Shorter Fire Department was paged out to an overturned single vehicle accident also involving fire at mile post 21, southbound I85. Upon arrival a commercial concrete truck was found on its side engulfed in flames. Waugh-Mt Meigs Fire/Rescue was requested for mutual aid with their first arriving unit helping to supply the initial water for fire attack. Shorter and Waugh FD units were able to bring the incident safely under control within just a few minutes. The driver was able to exit the vehicle after the crash on his own with no sustained injuries. The right lane continues will be closed for recovery of the vehicle.

While enroute to the scene Shorter Fire Department units met a heavy flow of traffic coming up the entrance ramp to I85 which impeded units from arriving on the scene quicker. As a Public service reminder...although you may be delayed in traffic for some time because of an accident further downstream in the flow, chances are someone may need fire/medical services which you are preventing by traveling illegally in the wrong direction. Please keep emergency lanes clear and obey the traffic laws. Stay alert as traffic conditions can rapidly change.

At approximately 2:02 AM this morning, the Shorter Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial tractor-trailer fire on I85 Southbound at Mile Post 23. Upon arrival, fire units encountered a fully engulfed tractor and trailer, which had also ignited an adjacent ground cover fire. The fire was promptly extinguished without injury to fire personnel or the commercial unit's driver. The Shorter Fire Department received assistance from Waugh-Mt Meigs Fire/Rescue and Franklin Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department , who provided both personnel and equipment.

A subsequent incident was reported at approximately 7:16 AM, involving a two-vehicle accident at the identical location. A southbound driver entered the safety zone and collided with a service vehicle. Fortunately, the driver sustained only minor injuries, and no other personnel on scene were injured.

Recovery operations are currently ongoing in the area; therefore, please exercise caution when driving through. The right lane is currently blocked with traffic flow in the left lane.

We urge all motorists to adhere to the Move Over Law to ensure the safety of our emergency scenes, thereby protecting both the public and our personnel. Please remain alert while traveling and anticipate potential changes in driving conditions at any given moment.
