🔬 Three priorities guide Caddo Lake Institute's work:
1️⃣ Natural flows: protecting the seasonal rhythm of water Caddo's cypress wetland depends on, and making sure there is always enough water to sustain it 2️⃣ Paddlefish: bringing back a 300-million-year-old species that vanished from Caddo in the 1950s, reintroduced since 2014 thanks to restored natural flows 3️⃣ Water quality: monitoring pollutants like mercury, bacteria, and excess nutrients to protect the lake's water and wetlands.
💧 Every project we take on serves these goals. This month, we'll show you what that work looks like.

Mussels filter water and improve water quality. A beautiful range of species were found in the bayous between Lake O’ the Pines and Caddo Lake in the Cypress Basin this week.

Caddo Lake Institute was part of continued monitoring of fish health and freshwater mussel diversity in Big Cypress Bayou and Little Cypress. Texas Parks and Wildlife headed up the survey crew with Caddo Lake Institute and Nature Conservancy Texas assisting for another great year of data assessing the health of the habitat and the critical resource of our bayous. Initial results showed good diversity of species.

Ending September with a favorite: our native paddlefish restoration work. 🐟These ancient, strange-looking fish were once common in this basin, and restoring them isn't just about one species — it's a sign of a healthy, functioning wetland.

Thanks for following along with us this month!
There's always more happening at Caddo Lake than makes the headlines.

🦋Keep an eye out this month — monarch butterflies are moving through Texas on their fall migration south, and East Texas wetlands like Caddo Lake are part of the landscape they pass through on the way. It's one of nature's great long-distance journeys, and a good reminder of how connected this ecosystem is to places far beyond our shoreline. If you spot one, snap a photo and share it with us.

Grateful to be part of Day 1 of the East Texas Water Institute. Stephen F. Austin, Angelina College, and the Temple Foundation know the importance of water to the future of East Texas. This will provide more information and opportunities for East Texas to understand, value, utilize, and protect East Texas water for East Texas and East Texans.

🍂The seasons are turning at Caddo Lake. As the light changes, so does the lake — cooler mornings, shifting bird activity, and cypress trees getting ready for their fall color. It's one of the best times of year to get out on the water. If you visit this fall, we'd love to see your photos.

🔬It's World Water Monitoring Day! One of the quietest but most important things we do at Caddo Lake Institute is track water quality across the basin — reading gauges, checking for pollutants, watching how flow levels change over time. It's not glamorous work, but it's how we know what's actually happening in this ecosystem before a small problem becomes a big one. Science first, always ⚛

Some of the smallest creatures at Caddo Lake are doing some of the biggest work. Giant Salvinia is an invasive floating fern that can blanket open water and choke out a large body of water at a lighting pace. We have partnered with who are using natural predators to combat this invasive plant - The Salvinia Weevil, a tiny insect doing a very big job 🌿🐞.

It's slow, steady science, and it's exactly the kind of unglamorous work that keeps this wetland healthy. Thank you to the whole team over there for the partnership. Science doing the quiet work!

🧠Did you know: Nothing in state or federal law requires that Caddo Lake keep receiving the water it needs? The flow guardrails that protect this lake are held in place by decades of monitoring, advocacy, and agency relationships. That's been our work for more than three decades: monitoring, advocacy, and a seat at the table when upstream decisions get made.
