Last night, we had the honor of welcoming two new officers to the Shutesbury Police Department, while also recognizing Sergeant Curtis McGuire with a Lifesaving Commendation.

I couldn’t be more proud of the Officers who work tirelessly every day to keep our community safe. Their dedication, courage, and commitment to serving Shutesbury are truly something to be proud of.

I also want to extend my sincere gratitude to our incredible community for the continued support you show our officers.

And a very special thank you to the families of our officers. Families often make sacrifices so that these officers can be here serving and protecting our amazing community. We are grateful for your support and sacrifice as well.

Congratulations to our two newest officers, and congratulations to Sergeant McGuire on this well-deserved recognition. We are fortunate to have you all serving Shutesbury.

🚦New Speed Feedback Signs Deployed

The Shutesbury Police Department is pleased to announce the deployment of three new speed feedback signs throughout town.

📍Pelham Hill Road - 1 stationary speed feedback sign

📍Prescott Road - 1 portable speed trailer

📍Lakeview Road - 1 portable speed trailer

These signs were acquired at no cost to the town through a MassDOT funded program aimed at acquiring traffic data at speed transition zones.

They are intended to increase driver awareness and encourage motorists to slow down and observe posted speed limits.

(For clarity, these signs do not contain cameras or license plate reader technology. They collect non-identifying traffic data, such as vehicle speeds and traffic volume, to help the Police Department better understand traffic patterns and identify areas where traffic safety improvements may be needed.)

Please slow down, drive safely, and help us keep Shutesbury’s roads safe for everyone. 🚔

The Shutesbury Police Department wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable celebration of the 250th anniversary of our nation's independence.

As a reminder, fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts. M.G.L. c. 148, § 39, which prohibits the sale, possession, and use of fireworks, and/or any applicable related offense such as M.G.L. c. 272, § 53, (Disorderly Conduct) will be enforced.

There are many legal firework displays on both July 3rd and July 4th. For instance, Amherst will have an Independence Day celebration with live entertainment, food vendors, and fireworks at UMass, utilizing the south lawn of McGuirk Alumni Stadium. For everyone's safety, please leave pyrotechnic displays to trained professionals and enjoy the holiday responsibly.

ROAD WORK ALERT:

Telephone pole replacement work will continue on Pratt Corner Road this upcoming week and for several weeks after. This work is to install new taller poles and replace an existing line. The location of the work is roughly from the Sand Hill Road intersection to the Leverett Road intersection. There will be times when the road will be closed to through traffic. It is difficult to predict with any degree of accuracy when the road will be closed, because it is dependent upon where the crew has to set their trucks up and the particular width of the road in that location. The work will occur from 7:30AM until 3:30PM Monday through Friday, meaning the road will be guaranteed to be open every day after 3:30PM. We ask for patience as the work is completed, and if there are any questions please reach out to Chief Pelletier or Sergeant McGuire.

A fantastic job by the Orange Police Department an K9 Zeus. This is a good opportunity for a reminder of the importance of locking the doors of your vehicles and residences.

On Thursday, June 18 at approximately 1:12 am, Orange Police Officers were dispatched to the area of Drew Boulevard and Oak Drive for vehicles being broken into. Officers working the 11pm to 7am shift arrived in the area quickly. Three juvenile suspects fled from police into the woods. OPD quickly set up a perimeter and requested K9 Zeus for a suspect track.

K-9 Zeus and his handler, Officer Johnson responded and began a track from where one of the suspects left a bicycle. K-9 Zeus led officers through back yards and woods and eventually to a wooded area off of Oak Drive where two of the suspects were hiding. Both juveniles were apprehended. The third juvenile suspect surrendered to police on Drew Boulevard.

The suspects broke into and stole items from at least 12 vehicles. The majority of the stolen items were recovered and are in the process of being returned to the victims.

Excellent work by OPD mid-shift (Officers Hager and Starbard), K-9 Zeus, MSP, Athol PD, and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit.
