πŸŽƒπŸš¨ SPOOKY SEASON: 911 OR NOT? πŸ‘»πŸ“ž

Let's put your 911 knowledge to the test!

πŸ‘» 1️⃣ Someone in a scary costume jumps out and startles you while trick-or-treating.

πŸŽƒ 2️⃣ You see smoke coming from a neighbor's house, but nobody is answering the door.

🍬 3️⃣ Someone stole your entire bowl of Halloween candy off the porch.

πŸš— 4️⃣ You witness a vehicle strike a trick-or-treater.

πŸ•ΈοΈ 5️⃣ A suspicious person is walking around your neighborhood wearing a mask.

πŸ”₯ 6️⃣ A Halloween decoration catches fire and the flames begin spreading toward the house.

πŸ€” WHICH ONES ARE 911 EMERGENCIES?

🚨 Remember, 911 is for emergencies involving an immediate threat to life, safety, or property. Suspicious behavior alone doesn't always mean there's an emergency.

πŸŽƒπŸ‚ HELLO, OCTOBER! πŸ‚πŸŽƒ

Spooky season has officially entered the dispatch center. πŸ‘»πŸŽ§

As we head into a new month, your friendly voices behind 911 have a few reminders:

🦌 Watch for deer, especially around dawn and dusk.
πŸŒ™ Days are getting shorter β€” slow down and stay alert after dark.
🚜 Give farm equipment plenty of room on the road.
πŸ”₯ Be smart with fire pits, burn piles, and other fall fires.
πŸ‘» Keep an extra eye out for little ghosts and goblins as Halloween gets closer.
πŸ“ And as always, know your location when calling 911.

We’ll be here all October β€” through the tricks, the treats, and everything in between. πŸŽƒβ˜ŽοΈ

🚨 Emergencies don't take a spooky season break, and neither do we.

Happy October from all of us at Cheyenne County Emergency Communications Center! πŸ§‘πŸ–€

🚨🎧 MYTH MONDAY β€” LAST ONE OF SEPTEMBER! πŸ‚

❌ MYTH:
β€œOnce I tell the dispatcher what's happening, I can hang up and wait for help.”

βœ… FACT:
If a dispatcher asks you to stay on the line, there’s a reason. πŸ“ž

While responders are on the way, the situation can change quickly. Staying connected allows us to:

❀️ Give lifesaving instructions
πŸš“ Pass new information to responders
⚠️ Warn responders about possible hazards
πŸ“ Clarify your location or other important details
πŸ—£οΈ Help guide you through what to do next

You may hear a lot of questions, but EVERY QUESTION HAS A PURPOSE. 🎧

Unless staying on the phone puts you in danger, don’t hang up until the dispatcher tells you it’s okay to disconnect.

🍁 As September comes to an end, remember:

We’re here 24/7 β€” every season, every day, every call. ❀️

πŸ‚πŸš¨ FALL INTO SAFETY FRIDAY! πŸš¨πŸ‚

September is almost in the rearview mirror, and fall is officially here! πŸŽƒπŸ

As the days get shorter and the temperatures start dropping, here are a few reminders from your dispatchers:

🦌 Watch for deer β€” especially around dawn and dusk.

🚜 Share the road β€” harvest season means more farm equipment traveling our highways and county roads.

πŸŒ™ Expect earlier darkness β€” watch closely for pedestrians, cyclists, animals, and stopped vehicles.

πŸ”₯ Be careful with fall burning β€” know local restrictions and never leave a fire unattended.

πŸš— Slow down & buckle up β€” getting there a few minutes later is always better than not getting there at all.

And as always...

πŸ“ž For an emergency, call 911.
🎧 We'll be hereβ€”pumpkin spice or not. πŸ˜‚β˜•πŸ‚

Have a safe last weekend of September from all of us at Cheyenne County Emergency Communications Center! ❀️

🚨🎧 MYTH MONDAY!

❌ MYTH:
β€œIf I call 911 from a cell phone, dispatchers can see my exact location.”

βœ… FACT:
While 911 technology can provide valuable location information, it isn’t always exact. πŸ“

Buildings, rural areas, phone settings, network conditions, and other factors can affect the location information we receive.

That’s why you may hear us ask:

πŸ“ β€œWhat’s the address of your emergency?”
πŸ›£οΈ β€œWhat road are you on?”
πŸͺ β€œWhat landmarks or businesses are near you?”
πŸš— β€œWhat direction are you traveling?”

Even if you think β€œThey should already know where I am!” β€” please answer anyway. ❀️

The faster we can CONFIRM your location, the faster we can make sure help is headed to the right place.

🎧 Technology is a great tool. Your voice is an important part of the call.

🎧🚨 β€œFinish the Call Friday”

Give followers the beginning of a pretend 911 call and see how well they know what comes next:

πŸ“ž 911 Dispatcher:
β€œ911, what’s the address of your emergency?”

Caller:
β€œI’m at home and someone is trying to get through my front door.”

😳 YOU’RE THE DISPATCHER NOW…

What’s the NEXT thing you’d want to know? πŸ‘‡

A️⃣ Are you somewhere safe?
B️⃣ Do you know who the person is?
C️⃣ Do you see any weapons?
D️⃣ What does the person look like?
E️⃣ Their phone number then name.

🎧 Every question has a reason. Every answer can help keep callers and responders safer.

🐾 DOG-GONE IT! 911 OR NOT?

Which of these situations would you call 911 for?

1️⃣ πŸ• A loose dog is running around your neighborhood.
❌ Generally NOT 911 β€” contact animal control on the appropriate non-emergency number.

2️⃣ πŸš—πŸ• A dog is locked inside a hot vehicle and appears to be in distress.
🚨 CALL FOR HELP β€” especially if the animal appears to be in immediate danger. Follow your local agency's guidance on whether to use 911 or the non-emergency line.

3️⃣ 🐢 Your dog got out of the yard and you can't find them.
❌ NOT 911. Contact animal control/local shelters and post in local lost-pet groups.

4️⃣ πŸ•β€πŸ¦Ίβš οΈ An aggressive dog is actively attacking someone.
βœ… 911! There's an immediate threat to someone's safety.

5️⃣ 🐾 You found a friendly stray dog wandering around.
❌ Generally NOT 911. Contact animal control on the appropriate non-emergency number..

6️⃣ πŸ•πŸ’₯ A dog has been hit by a vehicle and the crash or injured animal is creating an immediate roadway hazard.
🚨 This may warrant an emergency call depending on the danger to motorists or people at the scene.

🐾 Not every doggone problem is a 911 emergency!

Knowing when to call 911 vs. the non-emergency line keeps emergency lines available for situations involving an immediate threat to life or safety.

And since it's National Dog Day...

🚨 MYTH MONDAY: "They haven't sent anyone yet!"

❌ MYTH:
β€œIf the dispatcher is still asking me questions, they haven't sent help yet.”

βœ… FACT:
Help may already be on the way while we're still talking to you. πŸŽ§πŸš‘πŸš’πŸš“

Dispatchers can continue gathering critical information while responders are being notified and sent to the scene.

Those questions aren't wasting timeβ€”they help us:
πŸ“ Confirm exactly where you are
⚠️ Tell responders what they're walking into
❀️ Give lifesaving instructions when needed
πŸš” Keep responders informed of changing conditions

So don't hang up because you think we're asking too many questions. Stay on the line, listen carefully, and answer the best you can.

🎧 We're talking to you AND working behind the scenes to get you help.

🚨🎧 THINK LIKE A DISPATCHER!

πŸ“ž β€œ911, what’s the address of your emergency?”

A caller reports a strong smell of smoke, but they don't see any flames. πŸ”₯πŸ‘ƒ

Now it's YOUR turn to sit behind the console...

πŸ€” What questions do you think our dispatchers ask next?

There may be more than one right answer! Drop your guesses below. πŸ‘‡
