Year after year, the milkweed in the Buckland garden has been a magnet for monarchs in all life stages, and this year was no exception. This newly emerged monarch butterfly was spotted on the afternoon of October 2nd.

In honor of Nevada’s birthday this month, we have set up a Nevada state symbols scavenger hunt at Buckland Station. Come see how well you know the state symbols and how many you can find hidden inside the historic home.

Buckland Station is currently open weekends (Saturdays, Sundays), 10:00AM to 2:00PM. The scavenger hunt will be available every weekend in October. Museum admission is $1.00 for visitors 13 years of age and older. Hope to see you soon!

Yesterday afternoon was filled with delightful and unexpected nature encounters - a gopher snake winding its way through the garden, a monarch butterfly laying eggs on a milkweed plant, and a coyote successfully catching a meal. What a gift to observe nature’s intrinsic rhythms and realities.

How will you be spending the Fourth of July?

In 1876, Eliza Buckland resigned herself to celebrating quietly at home with roast chicken and ice cream for supper. She had hoped to attend festivities in Carson or Virginia City, but her husband, Samuel, and oldest son, George, were away delivering cattle.

Whether your day is lively or quiet, we hope you have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July!

Earthquakes are not an uncommon occurrence in western Nevada. In December 1869, Eliza Buckland wrote about an earthquake that made her room “rock like a cradle” and nearly frightened her to death.

Fortunately, Monday’s 5.7 magnitude quake, centered near Silver Springs, did not cause any damage to historic Buckland Station. Thanks to everyone who has reached out to express concern.

The house is alive with the sound of music!

A few young visitors shared their gift of music with us today making the house feel less like a museum and more like a home – a place of familiarity, comfort, security, connection, and belonging.

The piano originally resided at Buckland Station with the Towle family from 1907-1917 and was donated to Nevada State Parks in 2017. We can only imagine the cherished memories the Towle family created around the piano and the joy and warmth it brought to their home.
