Perseverance 💪

That’s the one word Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao used to describe his naval career during a question and answer session with Sailors at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor on Monday.

It’s a character trait that’s defined the Acting Secretary’s professional life and it’s a character trait our submariners embody when they dive beneath the waves to defend the homeland and deter aggression.

Because of their perseverance, your U.S. Navy Submarine Force remains the apex undersea predator. 🦈

I’ll Trade You 🤝 Submarine Group Ten

Yesterday, Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Wyoming (SSBN 742) arrived at its new homeport of Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, completing a hull swap with USS Pennsylvania (SSBN 735) which changed homeport to Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia.

This first-of-its-kind operation for Ohio-class submarines was a planned component of the Navy’s long-term fleet modernization strategy to position the newer Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines at Bangor. This process prepares the submarine fleet for the introduction of the future Columbia-class ballistic missiles submarines, while ensuring Sailors and their families experience the least disruption possible.

Unlike a traditional homeport change, this hull swap allowed two submarines to relocate while the crews and their families remained at their original duty station. The operation eliminated the need for most assigned Sailors to move across the country, underscoring the Navy's commitment to both its critical national security mission and the provision of geographical preference for service members and their families.

Request permission to enter the Chiefs Mess ⚓🐐

Yesterday, COMSUBGRU 9 and Trident Training Facility-Bangor welcomed their newest members of the Chiefs Mess during a ceremony at the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport, Washington.

For each new chief, the ceremony represented years of persistent hard work and dedication to the Navy’s mission. Donning the khaki uniform and wearing the fouled anchor of their new rank mark significant milestones in their careers and come with an increased burden of responsibility.

The ceremony also served as a reminder that the Sailors who operate the platforms that dominate the undersea domain will always be the Submarine Force’s greatest competitive advantage.

Bolstering Strategic Deterrence 💪

Yesterday, U.S. Air Force missileers from the 315th Weapons Squadron toured Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN 730) during a professional development visit to Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor. The visit included hands-on training at the Trident Training Facility and a meeting with Rear Adm. Todd Figanbaum, commander of Submarine Group 9.

The 315th Weapons Squadron, assigned to the U.S. Air Force Weapons School, provides the ICBM Weapons Instructor Course, developing graduate-level experts in ICBM weapons and tactics. Graduates return to ICBM missile wings to serve as tactical experts on the employment of their weapon system.

SSBNs like Henry M. Jackson serve as survivable, undetectable launch platforms for intercontinental missiles. Together, the Navy's SSBN force and the Air Force's ICBM force represent two legs of the U.S. nuclear triad.

Engagements like this strengthen interoperability across the Joint Force, helping ensure our services can seamlessly integrate to accomplish this vital mission.

Roll Tide!

This week, Maj. Gen. David Bligh, Judge Advocate General of the Navy, toured Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Alabama (SSBN 731) during a visit to Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor.

Bligh is the second Marine to serve as the JAG – the first since Col. William Remey was appointed the inaugural JAG in 1878 – and is the senior uniformed legal advisor to the secretary of the Navy and the chief of naval operations.

Connecting senior leaders with our Sailors and the platforms they operate is critical to ensuring our force remains aligned, informed, and mission-ready.

Technology ⚛️ and Tradition 🫡

Today, Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine USS San Juan (SSN 751) held its decommissioning ceremony, 38 years to the day after entering service.

Featuring the ship's original sponsor, Mrs. Sherrill Hernandez, the ceremony also marked Fire Control Technician Seaman Robert Missimer becoming the last San Juan Sailor to earn his dolphins.

For some, the ceremony closed a chapter that began in Groton in 1988. For others, it was their first opportunity to experience the history of a submarine they had known only through the stories shared by loved ones. For all, it was a chance to bid "fair winds and following seas" to a ship that faithfully served until her final watch.

Joint force capability in action.

Last month, Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Nebraska (SSBN 739) participated in an armed airborne es**rt exercise with an A10 Thunderbolt II.

AAEs demonstrate joint force readiness to protect SSBNs, ensuring they remain a credible, reliable, and survivable force capable of operating anywhere in the world. 🌎

SSBNs remain a top U.S. Department of War priority due to their unmatched stealth and second-strike capability. Their strategic importance necessitates the strongest protection available during critical surfaced operations.

At the forefront of undersea innovation.

This week, U.S. Navy Submarine Force leaders gathered at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor for the 2026 Subsea & Seabed Warfare and Technology Symposium. This two-day conference focused on specific challenges and opportunities associated with the undersea domain.

The symposium included technical exchanges among government, industry, and academia, as well as keynote addresses from Vice Adm. Rob Gaucher, Director, Submarine Programs; Vice Adm. Rick Seif, commander, Submarine Forces; Rear Adm. Chris Cavanaugh, commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet; and Rear Adm. Mel Smith, commander, Submarine Group Two.

Events like SSWATS are critical to maintaining maritime dominance by fostering collaboration among operational leaders, technical experts, and industry partners.

The "Defender of Freedom" has a new commander.

Last week, Cmdr. Daniel Brauer relieved Cmdr. Ryan Stewart as commanding officer of USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN 730) Gold Crew.

The submarine is unique among its class, named after the late U.S. Senator Henry "Scoop" Jackson, who advocated for the role of the U.S. Navy and championed the development of the Ohio-class.

"Scoop understood something fundamental," Stewart said during the ceremony. "Deterrence is not simply a military mission. It's a moral obligation. It's the quiet, constant work that prevents wars, protects families and preserves the future. Commanding a ship that fulfills that very mission has been the single greatest honor of my career."

“You tend a flame our nation cannot allow to be extinguished. Day after day, patrol after patrol, decade after decade, unheralded, you have kept the watch.”

Last week, Adm. Rich Correll, commander of U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), visited Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines USS Kentucky (SSBN 737) and USS Pennsylvania (SSBN 735).

SSBNs, like Kentucky and Pennsylvania, are the most survivable leg of the nuclear triad and serve as undetectable launch platforms for ballistic missiles. They are designed specifically for stealth and the precise delivery of nuclear warheads.
