Celebrating Community, Culture & Local Business!

Several members of the City of Silvis team, including City Hall staff, City Council members, the Mayor, and representatives from the Silvis Police and Fire Departments, were honored to represent our community at the 2026 Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Gala.

Chief Karzin and Deputy Chief Vargas joined an evening of celebration alongside local business owners, community leaders, city officials, and guests from throughout the Quad Cities, recognizing the contributions and achievements of Hispanic-owned businesses in our region.

Events like these highlight the importance of supporting local entrepreneurs, building strong relationships, celebrating our diverse community, and working together to create opportunities for everyone to succeed.

The City of Silvis is proud to support the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the businesses and community members who help make the Quad Cities a vibrant place to live, work, and do business.

Your T-Shirts Have Arrived, Silvis!

If you pre-ordered a T-shirt supporting Gilda’s Club of the Quad Cities, your order is now ready for pickup!

You can pick up your shirts at the Silvis Police Department Monday–Friday between 8 a.m.–4 p.m.

These shirts are designed in recognition of Women’s Health Month. This effort carries a special meaning for our department, and especially for Officer Walter.

When a member of Officer Walter’s family was going through cancer treatment, Gilda’s Club provided support during a difficult and uncertain time. That experience stayed with him and inspired him to find a way to give back to an organization that had been there for his family.

Cancer affects more than a person’s physical health. It can bring worry, uncertainty, and emotional challenges for the person receiving treatment and for everyone who loves them. Having somewhere to turn for encouragement, understanding, and connection can make a meaningful difference.

For Officer Walter, these shirts represent an opportunity to say “thank you” and help extend that same spirit of support to others. For our department, they are another way to stand alongside the people and families in our community whose lives have been touched by cancer.

To everyone who pre-ordered a shirt: thank you for being part of this effort. Your willingness to participate reflects the compassion of our community and helps bring attention to the importance of women’s health and cancer support.

Thank you, Officer Walter, for turning a personal experience into an opportunity to help others. And thank you to Gilda’s Club of the Quad Cities for the support you provided to his family and the care you offer to families facing cancer.

Stop by during the hours listed above to pick up your pre-ordered shirt. We look forward to seeing you wear it with pride—and with purpose.

Investing in the Future of Law Enforcement!

Deputy Chief Vargas represented the Silvis Police Department at the “Future Fest” career fair in Eldridge, Iowa, yesterday, October 13. He connected with students, educators, and industry leaders to promote law enforcement as a rewarding profession rooted in service, dedication, and community.

Events like Future Fest give students an opportunity to explore career paths and connect with professionals who can help them envision their future. For law enforcement, these conversations are a chance to share how policing extends beyond responding to call, it involves helping people, solving problems, building trust, and making a positive difference in the lives of others.

Introducing students to the profession helps them consider how their interests, abilities, and commitment to service could lead to a meaningful career. Connections with educators and other industry leaders also help strengthen the relationships that bring future applicants to our department.

For Silvis, this outreach is both a valuable recruiting tool and an investment in the future. Strong departments depend on dedicated people, and recruiting begins with creating connections and showing the next generation what a career in public service can offer. A conversation at a career fair today could be the first step toward serving our community tomorrow.

Thank you, Deputy Chief Vargas, for representing the Silvis Police Department, supporting our recruitment efforts, and helping inspire tomorrow’s officers.
