Superintendent Search
I’ve gotten a number of phone calls asking why I hold back in contentious school board meetings. Though I try to maintain decorum, I want to make sure everyone understands that I am trying my hardest to represent the people who elected me. I make every effort to not embarrass or insult anyone. Whenever I speak from my seat on the school board, please note that I have always been respectful to each of my fellow board members, and consider that my views are borne from over three decades of teaching in this district, and my input is informed by the work that I still do in schools every day.
Every time I make a decision, I ask three questions: Is it logical? Is it reasonable? Is it sustainable? To me, this superintendent search isn’t logical because our final candidate likely won’t end up working for the board that chose him/her. Five of seven board members are up for re-election in approximately 400 days, and an outgoing board is not the group that should choose a leader whom they may only work with for a matter of weeks.
This isn’t reasonable because quality superintendent candidates want to know who they’ll be working for. We are starting multiple new initiatives, such as the K-8 Dual-Language program, the Building & Facilities improvement plan, and a new charter school. Any one of these by itself is a major undertaking. Any new superintendent will need the full support of the board and the public to lead these initiatives.
This isn’t sustainable because it isn’t logical or reasonable. A new board could come in and change the superintendent’s priorities and the district's direction on a whim. No new super wants that, and no district deserves it.
As board members, we prove to the community who we are by how we treat people and how we spend their money. Our track record over the last year has been less than stellar. During the past year, this board has failed to earn or deserve the public’s trust. We have wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars due to board members’ actions or inaction. The public is unlikely to forgive or forget these expensive decisions in 400 days.
Now is not the time for a superintendent search. This should wait until the public has the opportunity to elect a new board. They are the only group capable of holding this board accountable, and they’ll have the opportunity to do that in November of 2027.
The public doesn’t trust us, and for good reason. We need their full trust for any of this to work, and we simply don’t have it right now. The next school board election will show us who the public trusts. Those are the people who should be tasked with a superintendent search.
