It’s been a busy week of learning for Sioux City’s elementary school students! 🚒

For Fire Prevention Week, Sioux City Fire Rescue crews visited schools throughout the community, teaching students important lessons that could one day save their lives.

We joined firefighters at Perry Creek Elementary, Mater Dei Immaculate Conception Center, Unity Elementary, and Siouxland Christian School to see that education firsthand.

And the kids learned some important lessons!

• If there’s a fire, get outside and stay outside.
• Call 911 once you’re safely out.
• Make sure your home has working smoke alarms.
• Never go back inside for toys, pets, or belongings.
• Let firefighters do their jobs and follow their instructions.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower,” also focused on lithium-ion battery safety.

Students learned why it’s important to use the correct chargers, keep devices on hard surfaces while charging, and recognize the potential fire hazards of rechargeable batteries.

Throughout the week, firefighters also introduced students to their equipment, fire trucks, and the people who respond when emergencies happen.

Thank you to Sioux City Fire Rescue and our local schools for making fire safety education a priority. These are lessons we hope students never have to use, but ones they’ll carry with them for years to come.

Are your smoke alarms where they need to be, and are they working?

We recently joined Sioux City Fire Rescue’s John Nelsen inside a home where the new resident requested a Safe Home inspection. They wanted someone to walk through the house, check the existing smoke alarms and make sure they had the proper protection and placement throughout their new home.

During these inspections, Sioux City Fire Rescue can help identify where smoke alarms are needed and install battery-operated alarms when available. The alarms they install have sealed 10-year batteries, which matches the typical 10-year lifespan of a smoke alarm.

So, if you recently moved, live in an older home, aren’t sure how old your smoke alarms are, or simply want the reassurance of having someone take a look, Sioux City Fire Rescue can help.

📞 Call 712-279-6377 to ask about scheduling a Safe Home inspection.

Fire Prevention Week kicked off with a piece of Sioux City Fire Rescue history. 🚒

We visited Fire Station 6 in Morningside, the oldest fire station in Sioux City. Built in 1917, it has served the community for more than a century and is also the only Sioux City fire station with a basement.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower,” with a focus on the lithium-ion batteries we use every day.

Sioux City Fire Rescue shared three things to remember:

• Buy products with recognized safety certification marks such as UL, ETL, or CSA.
• Use manufacturer-approved chargers, charge devices on hard surfaces, and unplug them when fully charged.
• Never put lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling. Take them to an appropriate battery recycling location.

Fire prevention education will continue throughout the week of October 4-10, including visits to Sioux City elementary schools. Students in grades K-2 will learn about fire safety and explore fire equipment, while third graders will have an opportunity to practice what they’ve learned in the fire safety trailer.

And as always, thank you to the firefighters of Sioux City for everything you do to keep our community safe.
