As one of the largest fire departments in the upper Midwest, we are committed to the safety of Sioux Falls. We do more than fight fires, as emergency medical calls now make up more than half our emergency responses. We also have one of the larger Public Access Defibrillator programs in the country, and regularly provided CPR classes.

Round Up for Fire Safety! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

This October, the Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Smoke Alarm Program is benefiting from a community roundโ€‘up effort hosted by our local partner, Nybergโ€™s ACE Hardware.

Throughout the month, customers at their Sioux Falls store locations will have the option to round their purchase up to the nearest dollar. Every cent contributed through the roundโ€‘up goes directly toward purchasing smoke alarms for Sioux Falls residents.

These alarms are installed in homes across our community through the Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Smoke Alarm Program to help ensure families have working smoke alarms when they need them most.

Thank you to our program partner and to everyone who chooses to round up. Your support helps make Sioux Falls a safer place for all!

Need working smoke alarms in your home? Call the 211 Helpline Center to be added to our Smoke Alarm Program list.

Round up. Give back. Help protect a home.

๐Ÿ”‹ Fully Charged? Time to Unplug.

When your lithium-ion battery-powered device reaches a full charge, make it a habit to unplug it.

Avoid leaving devices charging unattended or overnight, and always follow the manufacturerโ€™s charging instructions. Taking a moment to unplug can help reduce the risk of overheating and battery-related fires.

๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ”ŒCharge it. Unplug it. Stay fire safe.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Feel hot? Stop using it. ๐Ÿ›‘

If a lithium-ion battery-powered device feels unusually hot to the touch, donโ€™t ignore it. Excessive heat can be a warning sign that something is wrong.

๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ”‹ Stop using the device and unplug it from the charger. Move away from anything that could catch fire, if it is safe to do so, and allow it to cool.

Never use a device with a battery that is swollen, leaking, damaged, smoking, or producing an unusual odor.

Our cadets continue to build skills through hands-on training. This week, they practiced search and rescue techniques, completed their first live-fire training, and learned how to support technical rescue operations. Each experience helps prepare them for what lies ahead.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Soft surfaces? Hard pass. ๐Ÿšซ

This Fire Prevention Week, letโ€™s talk about something we use every day: devices powered by lithium-ion batteries. ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ”‹

When charging phones, tablets, laptops, e-bikes, scooters, or other battery-powered devices, place them on a hard, flat surface - not a bed, couch, pillow, or other soft surface.

Soft surfaces can trap heat and create a fire hazard. Give your devices the space they need to charge safely. And remember: follow the manufacturerโ€™s charging instructions and use the correct charger.

A small change in where you charge can make a big difference in fire prevention.

Soft surfaces? Hard pass. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿ”‹๐Ÿ”ฅ Lithium-ion batteries power many of our tools, lawn equipment, e-bikes, and other rides. Reduce fire risk by charging them outside whenever possible, away from your home or garage. ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”‹

๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿš’ Happy Fire Prevention Week! ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ”ฅ

This yearโ€™s theme is โ€œCharge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower!โ€ โšก๐Ÿ”‹

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, but improper charging can create serious fire risks.

๐Ÿ”‹ Use the charger made for your device
โšก Charge on a hard, flat surface - not under a pillow or on a bed
๐Ÿ”ฅ Stop using batteries that are damaged, swollen, or unusually hot
๐Ÿšจ Never ignore signs of overheating

Charge safely. Prevent fires. Make safe charging your superpower! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿงฏ
