3,000 pounds of potatoes. Five hours. One very full horse trailer.

This harvest started with a question: How can two local farms work together to make the best use of our land and resources?

This season, Seed to Table Oregon wanted to create more room on the farm for crop rotation and cover crops—practices that support the long-term health of the soil. We also wanted to plant potatoes. Since potatoes require quite a bit of space, we decided to try something different.

We partnered with Boundless Farmstead to grow the potatoes there, combining Boundless’ experience and equipment with Seed to Table’s harvest crew and commitment to getting locally grown food into our community.

On harvest morning, eight of us met at Boundless. By 8:50, we were digging. Five hours later, the trailer was loaded with about 3,000 pounds of purple, red and gold potatoes.

The day has since been coined “The Best Day of Our Lives.”

For us, these 3,000 pounds represent more than a successful harvest. They’re a reminder of what’s possible when local farms collaborate—sharing knowledge, resources and labor while caring for the land that makes all of this possible.

And now those potatoes are making their way into our community. You’ll find them in Seed to Table Produce Shares and at the remaining Sisters Farmers Markets on October 18 and 25.

What does it take to harvest 750+ pounds of root vegetables in a single afternoon?

As we move further into the season, bulk harvesting becomes a big part of the rhythm on the farm. Cold-hardy root crops like carrots, radishes, and beets store well, which means our farm team can harvest them in large quantities ahead of time.

The team and volunteers gather as many roots as time allows, sends them through the root washer for a good barrel roll, then packs them into large storage bags and stacks them in the cooler.

“Some days we harvest 750+ pounds of root veggies in one afternoon! This is a big job that asks for many hands, so it also means the team will have a lovely chance to catch up while we harvest.” — Chloe, Farm Team Member

And those carrots have places to go! In the last pic, Amy, Chloe, Rubye, and Jenn are preparing 2- and 5-pound bags for .

From field to washer to market, there are a lot of hands behind every bag of carrots.

You never quite know what you’re going to find on the farm.

Lately, we’ve spotted a pepper ripening in a pattern we weren’t expecting, a purple tomatillo peeking out of its husk, a giant radish hiding among the beets, and another radish growing into a wonderfully wacky shape.

And then there’s Rubye’s melon—because sometimes we grow things just to see what happens!

Some of these are surprises, some are experiments, and some are simply part of the fun of growing food.

There’s always something new to notice, learn from or laugh about around here.

“Vivian does a great job and makes everyone feel comfortable to ask questions.”

We couldn’t ask for a better review of our Adult Gardening Workshops. Thanks, Frank!

There’s one more chance to learn with Vivian at the farm this season. Join us Saturday, October 10, for Successful Season Extension: Preparing the Garden for Winter and Beyond.

As Central Oregon’s short growing season winds down, you’ll learn practical ways to:
🌱 Extend your harvest
🌱 Amend and care for your soil at the end of the season
🌱 Rest your garden over winter to rebuild soil health
🌱 Seed wildflowers now for early spring blooms

You’ll leave with a plan for putting your garden to bed while setting it up for a strong start next year.

The elusive residents of Seed to Table

Meet Heckle, our resident peacock, who has been roaming the farm for almost 10 years!

He originally came to Seed to Table as a Mother’s Day gift to Peggy from her children—Seed to Table founder Audrey Tehan and her siblings, Hattie and JC—and he’s been part of farm life ever since.

That doesn’t mean we always know where he is.

Heckle has a habit of disappearing for a while, then suddenly making an appearance again. He’s even been spotted down by the library, perhaps trying to get in a good read.

Peafowl are surprisingly well suited to life in Central Oregon. At night, they roost high in the pine trees—and we mean high, all the way at the top! When chicks are born on the farm, their mothers quickly teach them to hop onto picnic tables and, before long, to roost safely up in the trees.

And even when you can’t see them, you might hear them. Their unmistakable call has become part of the soundtrack of the farm.

They’ve made an impression on our young farmers, too. One recent review:
“Dear farmer, I liked peacocks.”

Join us for one of our upcoming volunteer days and you might spot Heckle or one of our peahens yourself—or ask our farm team for the latest peafowl stories.

We’re halfway there.

Thanks to this community, we’ve raised $30,000 toward our $60,000 Matching Challenge. Now we have until September 30 to raise the remaining $30,000.

Every gift made to Seed to Table this month is matched dollar for dollar, which means $25 becomes $50, $50 becomes $100, and $100 becomes $200.

Those doubled dollars support the work happening across Seed to Table: growing fresh food for our community, bringing kids to the farm for hands-on learning, expanding access to locally grown produce, and supporting Sisters Farmers Market as a place for local growers and neighbors to connect.

We’re so grateful to everyone who has helped us reach the halfway point. If you’ve been thinking about making a gift, now is a wonderful time to make it go twice as far.

Help us raise the final $30,000 by September 30.

A late-summer note from Farm Manager Rubye

“The all-mighty tomatoes have slowed down, empty beds are being seeded with cover crops, and the storage onions are curing in the propagation house. These small signs that fall is near bring me relief. I can feel my sense of drive shift into cruise control.”

After seven seasons on the farm, Rubye knows the rhythms of the growing season well—but July still hit hard this year.

The team battled purslane, planted 18,000 row feet of fall crops, took turns getting some well-earned time off, and harvested hundreds of pounds of food each week. And through it all, their spirits did not falter.

So what kept our Farm Manager going this summer?
🍝 Fresh pasta from Fresh Pasta Bend
🧘 Weekend yoga classes at Bend Yoga Center
🍪 Feeding coworkers snacks—and being fed snacks by coworkers
☕ Afternoon iced Americanos and chocolate muffins from Sisters Coffee Co.
🍉 LMNT watermelon electrolyte packets
📺 Catching on to the Ted Lasso hype six years late
❄️ And dark rooms with A/C after hot, smoky days on the farm

Now the tomatoes are slowing down, the onions are curing, and cover crops are going in. For the first time, Rubye says she’s even feeling a little excited for winter.

Here’s to enjoying the last moments of summer—and to all the little things (and people!) that carry us through a busy growing season.

“I’ve never tried radishes and I’m so interested in trying them!”
— 1st grader, mid-bite

Interested is a pretty wonderful word to hear from a six-year-old holding a radish.

Interested in trying something new. Interested in learning how it grows, who grows it, and what else might be out there.

Every year, alongside the carrots, tomatoes, and bok choi, we get to grow moments like this too — kids getting curious about where their food comes from, produce share members discovering a new-to-them vegetable, and neighbors connecting with local growers and one another at Sisters Farmers Market.

This fall, a generous donor is helping all of that go a little further by matching every gift to Seed to Table Oregon, dollar for dollar, up to $30,000.

That means every gift made through September is doubled, supporting the food we grow, farm-based education, fresh food access, the Sisters Farmers Market, and the connections that grow alongside them.

If you’d like to be part of it, you can make a gift through the link in our bio.
