A Message from Mayor Clif Shaw Regarding Flock Cameras

Earlier this year, the City of Slaton and the Slaton Police Department were approached by the South Plains Auto Theft Task Force regarding a Mutual Cooperation Agreement for the installation and use of Flock automated license plate reader cameras within the City of Slaton.

The agreement and its accompanying resolution were considered and unanimously approved by the Slaton City Commission during its regular meeting on July 13, 2026. The matter was discussed in an open meeting, and no public comments opposing the agreement were received.

City officials were advised that the Texas Department of Transportation intended to install the cameras regardless of whether the City approved the agreement. The installation had previously been authorized by the Lubbock County Commissioners Court in a 4–1 vote in 2023. Precinct 2 Commissioner Jason Corley cast the only vote in opposition.

Under the agreement, the City agreed to pay one-third of the installation and ongoing maintenance costs. In return, the City was given input regarding the placement of the cameras, and the Slaton Police Department was granted access to the system for legitimate law-enforcement purposes.

The City’s share of the installation costs was $5,950, and its share of the ongoing maintenance costs is projected to be less than $1,000 annually. These expenses were paid from the Police Department’s annual appropriation, which is funded through property tax revenue.

At the time the agreement was presented, Slaton was experiencing a series of trailer thefts. Had the cameras already been in place, they could have provided investigators with an important tool for identifying suspect vehicles, locating stolen property, and apprehending those responsible.

Because the cameras were expected to be installed regardless of the City Commission’s decision, the Commission determined that participating in the agreement was in the community’s best interest. Participation allowed the City to help select locations that would be most useful in investigating stolen vehicles and trailers while also seeking to minimize the cameras’ effect on the daily lives and privacy of Slaton residents as much as reasonably possible.

The City understands that the use of this technology raises legitimate questions and concerns. The decision was made publicly, with the goal of balancing effective law enforcement, public safety, local oversight, and respect for the privacy of our residents.

The City of Slaton will comply with all applicable laws, directives, and requirements adopted or issued by the Governor, the Texas Legislature, and other appropriate governmental authorities concerning the use of this technology.

The Slaton Police Department is also committed to developing and enforcing strong policies governing access to and use of the Flock system. These safeguards will be designed to ensure that the system is used only for authorized law-enforcement purposes and to prevent misuse or abuse by department personnel.

The City of Slaton and the Slaton Police Department remain committed to protecting both the safety and the rights of our residents. We appreciate the community’s continued engagement and will remain transparent and accountable in our use of this technology.

🎈 🥳 Happy 115th Birthday to Slaton! 🥳 🎈

On June 15, 1911, Slaton was officially crowned and named after a local rancher and banker, O.L. Slaton. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway expanded through the country and was looking for a division point and service yard for its trains that traveled between Amarillo and Sweetwater. Mr. Slaton knew that the land just 17 miles outside of Lubbock would be the perfect location for the railroad to call home. And thankfully, he was correct!

Slaton became one of the most active division points on the entire Santa Fe system. The rail yard consisted of a roundhouse, which serviced the locomotive engines, a switching yard, a reading room, which housed the train crews, a depot, and a Harvey House. The booming railroad brought more people into town, where they would settle, raise families, and call Slaton home. As the town grew, more people meant more businesses, from banks to hotels and lumber companies, cotton gins, bakeries, and even a theater.

Although Slaton is considered a small town today, it holds a huge place in the hearts of all Slatonites.

So, Happy Birthday, Slaton, it’s our kind of town!
