Murray County Historical Museum We have a Reference Library and Family History Section too. The Historical Society is an important but often overlooked part of the county.

The history of Murray County is on display in the Murray County Historical Museum with its exhibits, programs and objects, archival, microfilm, and photographic collections. The Murray County Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the collection, preservation, interpretation, and dissemination of the county's history. The society was established in 1934 and operates the Murray County Historical Museum in cooperation with the Murray County Board of Commissioners. The Wornson Log Cabin, Koch Cabin at Lake Shetek State Park, the Country School No. 1 at End-O-Line Railroad Park, and the Dinehart-Holt House were restored by the society. It collects and maintains the material history of the county for the benefit of its residents and visitors. Vital records and historical objects that define the nature of Murray County can be found in the museums collections. The Murray County Historical Society is funded by support from its members, donations from museum visitors, contributions from the city of Slayton and local groups, and the support of the Murray County Board of Commissioners.

There is still time to complete your Murray County History Hunts! Completed hunts can be turned back in to the museum by Saturday October 17th to be entered into a drawing for a MCHS embroidered Carhart lunch bag cooler! History hunt booklets can be picked up at the museum or at the Slayton Public Library. Drawing will be held on October 18th at the Murray County Historical Society Annual Meeting.

Your group, organization, or business is invited to participate in the Murray County Historical Society's 2026 Holiday Open House at the Dinehart Holt House! This year the holiday open house will be December 5th.
This year in honor of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the theme will be "Red, White, and Blue." We encourage you to decorate a tree, area of the home, or even a whole room. Use your imagination to come up with something fun and unique!
The trees will be provided by the Murray County Museum. You will be responsible for lights, tree skirts, and all the decorations for your tree. Trees will be set up and ready to decorate by November 17 and must be completely decorated by December 2.
The last day to register to decorate a tree will be Monday, November 16. To let us know you would like to decorate a tree, email the Museum at [email protected] or call 507-836–6533.
While organizations, workplaces, and families are hopefully reading this, we will also mention that the Dinehart Holt House is available for rentals. Enjoy the historic venue that’s beautifully decorated for the holidays by yourselves and others! Contact the museum to reserve!
