While we celebrate July 4, 1776 as America's Independence Day, the first official public reading of the Declaration of Independence didn't happen until July 8, 1776.

After Congress adopted the Declaration on July 4, the document had to be printed by Philadelphia printer John Dunlap and distributed throughout the colonies. Once copies were ready, Congress ordered that it be read publicly "at the head of the army" and in communities across America.

Although some historians believe an informal reading may have taken place on July 4, the first officially documented public reading, recognized by the National Park Service, occurred on July 8, 1776, outside the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall) in Philadelphia.
