With the drop in temperatures, you have probably noticed the visitors to your bird feeders starting to pick back up!! Late summer and early fall bring many fruits, nuts, berries, and seeds in nature; birds much prefer to eat natural things like these and bugs when they are readily available. Now that the temps are dropping, bugs are dwindling, and fruits and berries are dropping, birds will be making a comeback to your feeding stations and will be looking for those high fat content seeds and suets that they so drastically need throughout the fall, winter, and spring months. What can you feed the birds that has the highest fat content? Well, good old black oil sunflower (as well as coarse sunflower chips, which is just black oil out of the shell) is one of the best things to offer the birds this time of year! Suet, which is fat with a mixture of flavors, peanut butter, and seeds, is also a great option and will bring in some of our favorite birds...woodpeckers! Last but not least, peanuts, both in the shell and out, are a great option for the birds as well. You can absolutely continue on feeding your usual bird seed mix, but consider amping it up with some added sunflower seeds or peanuts to make it more suitable to the time of year! You can find all of these seeds and so much more at The Birdwatchers Store! Open Monday-Saturday from 10-5 just outside of Slippery Rock, PA!
