The permanent Smithfield Police Department was established in 1950. It has progressed from its meager beginning with three full-time officers and one patrol car to its present complement of 46 sworn police officers, 19 civilian employees, and a modernized fleet of vehicles. The Department now operates in its organizational format with administrative, uniform, detective, record, and computer divisions. The Department is one of the most respected law enforcement agencies in the state, and is headquartered in a two-level building on four acres overlooking the Stillwater Reservoir. It houses a four-cell, lock-up facility and a full-service, police maintenance garage. In recent years the emphasis of the Department has shifted from a traditional law enforcement role to a more pro-active, community policing style to better serve its citizenry. Officer Robert Squillante, affectionately known as “Squib,” is retiring after 33 years of service with the Town of Smithfield. Officer Squillante began his police career on August 3, 1993, and quickly rose to become a Field Training Officer. Throughout his career, “Squib” is most notably known for his time in the Community Policing Division as both a D.A.R.E. Officer, as well as a School Resource Officer. Officer Squillante excelled in both positions, and he became the standard of what a Community Police Officer should be, not only at the Smithfield Police Department, but in American policing. If you research Community Policing, there should be a picture of Officer Robert Squillante attached to it.

Squib’s impact on the Town of Smithfield and to the Smithfield Police Department will last for generations to come, which we are all grateful for. We thank Officer Robert Squillante for his 33 years of dedicated service and wish him a safe and happy retirement.

The State of Rhode Island requires that all vehicles with an out-of-state title undergo a VIN Check, prior to registration.

The Smithfield Police Department performs VIN Checks on Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon for Smithfield Residents & Businesses Only at the police department, 215 Pleasant View Avenue, Smithfield.

(Upon arriving at the police station, slowly proceed directly to the “detached garage” in the rear parking lot. There is no need to first stop in at the Front Communications Center.)

RI Law allows for licensed RI Dealerships to conduct their own VIN inspections. If you purchased your vehicle from one of these locations, then you should check with the dealership to see if this service is available to you.

General Information about VIN Checks: You must have the vehicle, title (or a copy), and any document with your name and address on it. The procedure takes about ten minutes. The cost is $10.00 (cash or check – Please have exact change).

hazardous materials.
Officer Marcoccio has been trained and assigned to traffic and
commercial enforcement since 2015 and has earned numerous
accolades for his exceptional dedication and expertise. His
enforcement efforts have significantly enhanced roadway safety
throughout the region, and he has provided invaluable assistance to the State Police and other municipal agencies in commercial

Officer Wise consistently demonstrates excellence in traffic enforcement and is specially trained as one of the department’s two commercial vehicle enforcement officers. The Smithfield Police Department is fortunate to have an officer of his caliber, whose dedication to keeping our roadways safe makes our community stronger."

Smithfield Police Department “No‑Shave” Campaign Raises $1,050 for Charity

The Smithfield Police Department proudly participated in a “No‑Shave” campaign to support several charitable organizations. From November 1, 2025, through January 15, 2026, officers were permitted to grow facial hair in exchange for charitable donations. Each participating officer contributed $25.00 to each of the selected charities, and friends and family members of SPD were encouraged to join in by making their own contributions.

This year’s campaign supported three organizations whose missions directly impact veterans, children, and first responders:
• Home Base
• Cops for Kids with Cancer
• The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation
Thanks to the generosity of officers, their families, and the community, the campaign raised a total of $1,050.

This holiday season, the Smithfield Police Department will be participating in MADD RI’s 2025 DUI Honor Patrols in memory of Amber Pelletier, who was tragically killed by an impaired driver on May 5, 2019.

These patrols serve as a reminder of the devastating and irreversible consequences of driving under the influence. Every impaired driver removed from our roadways represents a life potentially saved.

Our officers will be working with a renewed sense of purpose, honoring Amber Pelletier and all victims of impaired driving, while reinforcing our continued commitment to protecting the safety of our community.

We urge everyone to make responsible choices: plan ahead, designate a sober driver, or use a rideshare service. There are no second chances on the road. One decision can change lives forever.
