🔥 A BIG THANK YOU TO AMAZON RDU2! 🔥

In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, we want to give a huge shoutout to Amazon RDU2 for their generous donation to the Smithfield Fire Department!

Amazon RDU2 donated several important home-safety items, including:

🧯 Fire extinguishers
🔥 Smoke detectors
☁️ Carbon monoxide detectors
💧 Water leak detectors

These items will help provide members of our community with tools that can prevent emergencies, protect property, and most importantly, save lives.

Fire Prevention Week is all about education, preparation, and taking simple steps to keep our homes and families safe — and partnerships like this help make that mission possible.

From your friends at the Smithfield Police Department, thank you, Amazon RDU2, for supporting our fellow first responders at the Smithfield Fire Department and for investing in the safety of our community!

It’s easy to plug in a phone, tablet or tool battery and forget about it.

As we continue Fire Prevention Week, the Smithfield Fire Department is reminding you to unplug devices once they’re fully charged. Leaving them connected can add heat and stress to the battery. Follow the manufacturer’s charging instructions and use a hard, flat surface. Beds, couches and pillows can trap heat around a charging device.

Make checking the battery level and unplugging part of your routine. Safe charging is a habit worth keeping all year.

Today’s Fire Prevention Week reminder from the Smithfield Fire Department: don’t ignore the warning signs of a failing battery.

Stop using a device if it becomes unusually hot, starts swelling, leaks, smells strange or makes popping or hissing sounds. Don’t keep charging it to see what happens. If the device is smoking or catches fire, get everyone out, stay out and call 911. Don’t try to pick it up or carry it outside.

Talk with your family about these warning signs so everyone knows when to stop using a device and get help.

We’re continuing Fire Prevention Week with a reminder about something most of us use every day: a charger.

This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” starts with choosing the right equipment.

Use the cord and charger that came with your device, or a replacement approved by the manufacturer. A charger that fits isn’t necessarily the right one, and using the wrong charger can damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.

Replace damaged or frayed cords, too. Take a minute today to check the chargers around your home.

It’s Fire Prevention Week! October 4–10, the Smithfield Fire Department is joining fire departments across the country to help families prevent fires and stay safe at home. This year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.” Throughout the week, we’ll share simple tips for safely charging the devices we use every day.

First up: power tools, e-bikes and scooters. These items use larger batteries that can create a serious fire hazard if they fail. Charge them outside when possible, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep charging equipment away from anything that could catch fire, and never block a doorway or escape route.

Take a look at where you charge, and follow along this week for more ways to help protect your family and your home.

🔥 October is Fire Prevention Month and this year’s theme is Charge into Fire Safety—Safe Charging is a Superpower! Smithfield Fire Department is ready get the message out by reminding everyone that these simple tips could prevent a lithium-ion battery fire and save your life!
🚨Use approved chargers: Only use the cord and charger that came with your device or one certified by the manufacturer.

🚨Charge on hard surfaces: Place devices on a desk or table; avoid charging on soft surfaces like beds, couches, or under pillows that can trap heat.

🚨Unplug when done: Remove devices from the charger once fully charged to avoid stressing the battery.

🚨Watch for warning signs: Discontinue use immediately if a battery becomes overly hot, starts swelling, smokes, or emits an unusual odor.

🚨Outdoor e-mobility charging: Charge larger items like e-bikes, scooters, and large power tools outside and away from exit paths.

If you would like more information on Lithium-ion battery safety and other safety tips, visit fpw.org or contact the Smithfield Fire Department.

Ignite your superpower and make a difference in the community!

"Power up" on Seat Check Saturday by having your car seats and booster seats checked. Booster seats only make up about 5% of seat checks, but when a booster does get checked, roughly 2 out of 3 need adjustment. A few minutes with a Child Passenger Safety Technician can turn “close enough" into “expert level."

Bring your car seats and booster seats by Target in Selma tomorrow, September 26 from 9am-1 pm, for a FREE check and get your questions answered while learning how to help keep your child safe on every ride.
