They used to come in waves, but now the scammers calling Clay County residents pretending to be our deputies is almost constant. There have been several recent reports around the county of victims losing large amounts of money to these scams.

The scammers call and tell residents that they missed jury duty and will be arrested unless they pay a cash bond. (Which they will eventually direct you to a Bitcoin ATM to do.) THIS IS ALWAYS A SCAM. If you have a voicemail from someone saying they're a Clay County deputy (they even use the names of our real employees sometimes) and need to contact you about "an urgent legal matter," report that number as junk to your cell phone carrier and delete it.

Some tactics they use:
- They keep you on the phone and try to convince you not to hang up.
- They tell you not to tell anyone about what's going on.
- They text fake legal documents.
- To convince you that they're legitimate, they may tell you personal information about you (addresses, family members or coworkers) they obtained from public online sources or data leaks on the dark web.

Remember: We will never call to tell you that you have a warrant. We will never demand money over the phone. Please share!

Please join us in welcoming Captain Brandon Ray to the Smithville Police Department!

Captain Ray was officially sworn in earlier this week, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his law enforcement career.

Captain Ray brings more than 15 years of law enforcement experience and a diverse background in patrol, investigations, tactical operations, narcotics enforcement, training, and supervision. Throughout his career, he has served as a shift supervisor, SWAT team member, narcotics investigator, task force member, and law enforcement instructor. He has also supervised both sworn and civilian personnel.

His command-level experience includes overseeing departmental training, evidence management, internal affairs, grant administration, special-event planning, and interagency operations. He is an experienced fi****ms, Taser, active-shooter, and de-escalation instructor and has worked extensively with local, state, and federal law enforcement partners.

We are excited about the experience and perspective he will bring to our command staff as we continue working to strengthen our department and serve the Smithville community.

Please join us in congratulating Captain Brandon Ray on his new position and welcoming him to the Smithville Police Department
