Over the last few days, Snyder Firefighters have been busy responding to mutual aid requests. On Friday evening, Snyder Firefighters responded as a standby Engine to East Amherst Fire Dept for a reported basement fire.

Saturday afternoon, and into the evening, Snyder Firefighters operated as one of many FAST Companies at a Multi-Alarm fire in the South Line Fire District of Cheektowaga. Snyder worked alongside Orchard Park and Jamieson Road as FAST on the third-alarm assignment for a fire in a commercial structure. The FAST companies provide specialized services for the rescue of trapped or lost firefighters. Snyder Fire has long provided this specialized service and routinely trains rigorously on these skills. Much of the job at the commercial fire in Cheektowaga, was observing and monitoring changing fire and smoke conditions, along with overall building safety. Due to the heavy fire load, and advanced fire conditions, much of the effort to extinguish the fire was done from the exterior; however, FAST crews monitored conditions as small crews did reconnaissance inside at various times.

Snyder Firefighters participated in Smallwood Drive Elementary Schoolโ€™s Fall Fest on Friday night, October 2, 2026. Members on the Fire Prevention Detail had a great time showing the Engine and talking about Fire Safety, which is especially important during Fire Prevention Month.

Remember to stop by our Fire Prevention Open House on Sunday, October 11, from 12-3 at the Snyder Fire Department!

In September, the Snyder Fire Department responded to 120 calls for service, bringing the 2026 total to 846 alarms.

Every call represents a moment where our members were ready to answerโ€”day or nightโ€”to protect life and property. We are grateful for our community's continued support and proud of the work our members do every day on alarms, in training, and around the community.

In addition to serving Snyder as a dedicated and devoted member of the Snyder Fire Department, TK also served the Town of Amherst as a dedicated member of the Amherst Police Department.

[AMHERST POLICE, NY] -- It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Retired Detective Thomas P. Kenney. Thomas began his law enforcement career with the Amherst Police Department in 1973, serving as a dedicated member of the department before retiring in September 1999 after a distinguished career. He also proudly served his community with the Snyder Fire Department.

Thomas was a dedicated professional who served his community with honor and was a respected colleague and friend who will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Thomasโ€™s family, friends, and fellow members of the Amherst Police Department and Snyder Fire Department during this difficult time.

The Snyder Fire Department sadly regrets to announce the passing of 60-year Active Life Member, Thomas P. Kenney, Jr., affectionately known as TK. Tom joined the Department in 1966 and holds the distinction of being the only member to have held the titles of Chief of Department, President of the Fire Company, and Fire District Commissioner.

Tom served as an Assistant Chief from 1972 until 1974 and from 1977 through 1982, and as the Chief of Department from 1982 through 1987. Additionally, Tom served as the Company President from 1989 to 1991, and again from 1999 to 2003, with other offices held such as Vice President, Secretary, and Director. TK also served as a Departmental Safety Officer. Tom was appointed to the Board of Fire Commissioners in 2008 and served in that capacity until 2016. Tom once again served as Vice President in 2020. Additionally, Tom served in many other capacities with various Departmental Committees.

TK stayed current on many fire-service topics and provided many of the younger members with tremendous experience and guidance from his time in the fire service. In recent years, Tom was a regular at Townwide and Company Day Drills.

TK was a fixture around the Firehouse, from making his famous meatballs and setting up other appetizers for the Annual District Equipment Inspection Dinner, always ensuring the Officers conducting the inspections in the truck bay had a plate of food. TK also ensured that the hot dogs were always cooked and ready for Open House, and that crews were taken care of after long incidents and drills, from stopping at Andersons and buying ice cream for the Engine crew on the way back from a Mutual Aid Fire in Tonawanda, to stopping at Tops and getting supplies for Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese dinners complete with an ice cream sandwich after cold, fall-night Tower Drills.

Tom is survived by his wife and children. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Please keep Tom's family in your thoughts.
