Mayor Micciche had a great trip to Seward yesterday, beginning at the Seward Middle/High School for a final walkthrough of the Gym floor and to view the now-operating elevator. Both projects were challenging.

The elevator was delayed due to finding a replacement for the obsolete operating system, component delays and technical issues. The gym floor began on time, but there was much more moisture damage to the subfloor than anticipated, the all US-made materials were delayed and there was a cost overrun due to transportation costs causing an approximately 30-day delay.

We are proud of the KPB and KPBSD teams for pushing through to completion. Principal Burns took his first ride on the elevator (see photo) and the gym floor (live the Seahawk logo) will open to students on Monday, October 26th once the top coating fully cures.

The group photo includes from left to right: Principal Burns, KPBSD Director of Operations Kevin Lyons, KPB Maintenance Director Nick Kemp, Mayor Micciche and Gunnar from Alaska Industries.

Mayor Micciche had a productive meeting on October 12th with (our own) UAA Chancellor Cheryl Siemers (right) and the new KPC Director Karen O’Hara (raised right here on the Kenai) about all things University of Alaska and Kenai Peninsula College.

The group discussed key issues affecting the various regions of the KPB, such as space and course/instructor availability in Seward, workforce/career and technical education (CTE) capacity throughout the Kenai, KPB nursing program capacity, 4-year program degree choice expansion @ KPC, encouraging local students to consider teacher-related courses, potential partnerships and land management issues.

KPC has served as a positive post-secondary educational force on the Kenai or over 50 years with great things occurring at KPB KPC campuses today. It was a positive meeting and Mayor Micciche believes that there is the real potential for even greater things to happen at KPC. We plan to meet with communities as a UAA/KPC/KPB team to learn what may be most important to local students and employers.

Thanks to Chancellor Siemers and Director O’Hara for taking the time to better understand the needs of the students and employers of the Kenai!
