Solon High School students connected with PNC employees and learned financial literacy skills during a mentorship day at PNC’s downtown Cleveland office.

During the interactive portion of the day, each student worked alongside a PNC volunteer to choose an occupation, then created a budget based on the salary for that position. They encountered unexpected expenses and gifts that challenged them to adjust their plans. The activity reinforced skills they’re learning in Essentials Math and gave them a chance to apply those skills in a new setting.

Students also had the opportunity to learn about careers at PNC and build professional connections. Thank you to the PNC team for making our students feel included and giving them a memorable day of learning!

Orchard students wrapped up a fantastic first quarter with a fall party full of games, treats and good company!

Hosted by the Orchard PTA, the celebration featured fresh popcorn and apple c***r, bead crafts, Bingo and board games. Students put their puzzle-solving skills to work in a cipher challenge to unlock a prize-filled chest.

They also had fun guessing the number of cheeseballs in a Jack O' Lantern jar and getting their energy out in the gym by playing co****le and basketball. They also shared some kindness by writing cards and messages to veterans for Veterans Day.

A big thank-you to the Orchard PTA and all the volunteers who made this special celebration possible!

How can you extract the most juice from 100 grams of apple? Solon High School biology students designed experiments to find out.

The lab is part of their unit on proteins. Students tested different approaches to juice extraction using the enzymes pectinase and cellulase. Some froze their apples and others grated them before letting them sit overnight with the enzymes. Next, they’ll compare their results to see which method extracted the most juice.

Solon High School AP Environmental Science students investigated how scientists assess water quality during a field trip to Jackson Field in Moreland Hills.

They used seine nets to collect fish and macroinvertebrates, which scientists study as indicators of water quality, and tested the North Chagrin River’s chemical and physical properties.

AP Environmental Science is a yearlong course that examines how natural systems interact and how scientists identify environmental problems, assess risks and evaluate potential solutions.

How does the heart work? Solon Middle School students are exploring that question firsthand by dissecting cow hearts in Medical Investigations.

Students have been learning about 14 structures of the heart and their functions. Today, they explored the heart’s external anatomy and took turns making an incision with a scalpel to prepare to examine its interior next week. Prior to the dissection, students reviewed lab safety and practiced making incisions on Play-Doh models of the heart in an earlier lesson.

The lab experience connects with a range of students’ interests and goals. Several said they enrolled in the course because they are interested in pursuing careers in health care, while others want to better understand human anatomy and how to stay healthy.

Taught by Marcea Harrison, Medical Investigations explores such topics as vital signs, genetics, forensics and the body’s circulatory and nervous systems through demonstrations, projects and labs.

The cow heart lab is the first of two major dissections. Later in the course, students will work in pairs to dissect sheep brains as they study the nervous system.
