On Sunday, October 11, 2026, the Somers Fire Department hosted the Tolland County Dive Team for training at Hurds Lake (Camp Aya-Po). Somers personnel assisted with training operations, including the use of Marine 146 to support the team’s activities.

The Tolland County Dive Team is a regional resource comprised of members and equipment from fire departments throughout the county. The team provides specialized capabilities during water-related emergencies and can be activated to respond throughout Tolland County and surrounding areas.

Thank you to the Tolland County Dive Team for the opportunity to host and participate in this training. Continued training and cooperation between departments and specialized teams help ensure our personnel are prepared to work together when emergencies occur.

Have you ever wanted to be a firefighter? Have you ever wanted to make a difference? Have you ever wanted to volunteer to serve our community?

If you said yes to any of those questions, we'd love to see YOUR NAME on the back of a fire coat!

The Somers Fire Department is always looking for motivated and dedicated individuals to volunteer and serve the Town of Somers as firefighters.

What do we have to offer?

-Modern equipment and gear.

-Weekly in-house training sessions that cover all aspects of firefighting and emergency medicine, both hands-on and in the classroom.

-A large number of highly experienced and trained members who are always willing to help new members, answer questions, and conduct training.

-A stipend program is also in place to financially compensate volunteers for their dedicated service and responses at all hours of the day and night.

-Training to become Firefighter 1 certified with the State of CT, like all of our firefighters, is covered. Continued training through other certification levels/classes is also offered.

-Once Firefighter 1 certified, volunteers can chose to be apparatus operators by being extensively trained to drive apparatus, and then certified by the CT DMV with a Q-Endorsement on their license. Once they have a Q-endorsement, members go through extensive pump operator training before being cleared as an apparatus operator.

-A Cadet program for high school students ages 16+ to gain experience in the realm of emergency services performing non-hazardous duties and support functions during training and on emergency scenes.

There are countless other reasons to volunteer with the Somers Fire Department. If you have any questions or would like to join, message us on our social media platforms, email us, or call the station at (860)749-7626. On Monday, October 5th, 2026, personnel conducted vehicle extrication training focusing on the tools, techniques, and procedures used during motor vehicle crashes.

Members worked through different extrication scenarios, practicing how to stabilize vehicles, gain access to patients, and safely remove occupants when conventional doors and access points are not an option. Training also provided an opportunity to work with our extrication equipment and reinforce the coordination and communication needed between members during these incidents.

Regular hands-on training ensures our personnel are prepared to respond safely and effectively when called upon to assist at a serious motor vehicle crash.

It's Fire Prevention Week October 4th to October 10th! The Somers Fire Department would like to share some safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association. This years focus is:

🔥Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.⚡

Help us spread the word that everyday actions can help prevent lithium-ion battery fires. Use your charging superpower by making smart choices every time you plug in. For more info: fpw.org.

Tips:

1. Use the cord and charger that came with your device or ones approved by the manufacturer. Using the wrong charger can damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.

2. Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or floor. Beds, couches, and pillows can trap heat and block airflow, which can cause a battery to overheat.

3. Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.

4. Unplug your device when it is fully charged. Leaving it plugged in longer than needed can increase heat and stress on the battery.

5. Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they fail.

6. When charging on a plane, keep portable charging devices on the tray table. Do not charge devices in overhead compartments and never charge e-cigarettes or vapes on a plane. If a battery overheats or fails, it is important for the flight crew to be able to respond quickly.

Follow these tips and stay safe!

A strong Nor’easter is expected to impact our area this weekend, bringing periods of heavy rain and strong winds. With saturated ground and fully leafed trees, the potential for downed trees, blocked roads, and power outages is a concern.

Please take a few minutes now to prepare your home and family.

POWER LINES & DOWNED TREES
• NEVER touch or approach a downed power line. Always assume it is energized and dangerous.
• Stay well away from any tree or object that is in contact with a power line.
• If you encounter a downed wire, keep others away and contact 911.
• Never drive around barricades or through a roadway blocked by wires or trees.

IF YOU LOSE POWER
• Use flashlights or battery-powered lanterns whenever possible. Avoid using candles.
• Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible.
• Unplug sensitive electronics to protect them from surges when power is restored.
• Check on neighbors, family members, and anyone who may need assistance.

GENERATOR SAFETY
If you use a portable generator:
• ONLY operate it outdoors.
• Keep it away from doors, windows, and vents.
• Never operate a generator in a garage, basement, shed, or other enclosed space.
• Never use a gas stove, oven, grill, or other fuel-burning appliance to heat your home.
• Make sure your carbon monoxide alarms are working.

Most importantly, don’t put yourself in danger trying to clear a tree, move a wire, or investigate an electrical hazard. Call 911 and stay at a safe distance.

Stay safe, stay informed, and check on your neighbors as we weather the storm together.
