๐Ÿšจ HAPPY EMERGENCY NURSES WEEK! ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ’™

Weโ€™re so thankful for the hard work and dedication emergency department nurses show every day. ER nurses are some of the most resilient people in healthcare. The highs are high, the lows are low, and no two shifts are ever the same. We see the work you put in, the challenges you face, and the difference you make for your patients. Weโ€™re grateful for all you do! ๐Ÿ’™

A special shoutout to our very own emergency nurses at KY3 โ€” Jess, Mike, Troy, and Eliza! ๐Ÿš

You take emergency nursing to another level, and weโ€™re proud to have you on our team!

Happy Emergency Nurses Week! ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿš‘๐Ÿ’™

๐ŸฉบWe had a great time at the health sciences career fair at Somerset Community College - Laurel Campus!

We loved getting the opportunity to connect with future nurses, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals and give them a glimpse into the world of flight medicine.

Students got hands-on with some of the skills and equipment we use in the field, including learning how to intubate, while also getting to ask questions and learn more about what itโ€™s like to work as a flight clinician.

Events like this are a great way to introduce students to the many career paths available in healthcare โ€” and who knows, we may have met some future flight nurses, flight medics, or other members of the KY3 team! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thank you to Somerset Community College โ€“ Laurel Campus for having us. We had a blast meeting everyone! ๐Ÿš๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿš KY3 was on the scene for the First Responders Fair! ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿš‘

We had a great time joining our fellow first responders and getting to meet members of the community. We even got to fly in for the event, giving everyone an up-close look at the aircraft and what we do in Helicopter EMS.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by to visit with us, and to all of the first responders who work alongside us every day. Weโ€™re proud to serve alongside you! ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿš Leadership That Stays Connected to the Front Line!

We recently had the honor of having Kelly Miller, Vice President of Clinical Services at Air Methods, fly along with us at KY3!

Kelly has been with Air Methods for nearly 20 years. He began his nursing career as a cardiac nurse right here at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital before transitioning to flight nursing with Air Methods in 2007.

Throughout his career with Air Methods, Kelly has served as a Clinical Base Lead, Regional Clinical Director, and now Vice President of Clinical Services.

We appreciate Kelly taking the time to ride along with one of our crews and spend some time back in the aircraft. While Kelly knows the flight environment well from his own experience as a flight nurse, opportunities like this are a great reminder of the work our frontline teammates do every day and the challenges and rewards that come with caring for patients in the air.

Having leaders who make time to reconnect with the crews doing this work every day is a great reflection of how much Air Methods values its teammates.

Thank you for spending the day with us, Kelly!๐Ÿš๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿš Landing Zone Training at Eubank Fire Department! ๐Ÿš’

Last week, we had the pleasure of teaching a Landing Zone (LZ) class at Eubank Fire Department!

LZ training is an important part of keeping both flight crews and ground crews safe when operating around an aircraft. A safe and well-prepared landing zone starts with good communication and an understanding of what the flight crew needs from the ground team.

Some of the key takeaways from an LZ class include:
โ€ข Proper LZ size and site selection
โ€ข Identifying obstacles and hazards
โ€ข Understanding wind direction and conditions
โ€ข How to communicate with the aircraft and flight crew

We recommend that every department host an LZ class at least once a year to stay current on the safest practices when operating around an aircraft.

A huge thank you to Eubank Fire Department for hosting us and for making safety a priority in our community!

Is your department due for an LZ class? Reach out to us at [email protected] to get one scheduled! ๐Ÿš

โ›ˆ๏ธ With severe weather moving through our area today, we wanted to share an important reminder about how weather impacts air medical transport.

A request for helicopter transport may be turned down for weather even if the sky looks clear where you are. Our pilots evaluate conditions along the entire routeโ€”including at the base, sending facility, receiving hospital, and everything in between.

โšก As a general safety practice, we avoid flying within 20 miles of lightning. Our crews continuously monitor radar, forecasts, and changing conditions to make the safest decision possible.

If our helicopter is unable to take a flight due to weather, that doesnโ€™t always mean all other transport options are exhausted. Our team evaluates all available resources, including fixed-wing aircraft when appropriate, to help get patients to the right level of care, at the right time, and in the right setting.

โœ… When in doubt, call us anyway. Even if you are unsure whether weather conditions will allow us to fly, let our pilots assess the situation and make the determination. We are available 24/7 to provide weather updates, discuss transport options, and support our EMS and hospital partners.

Crew and patient safety will always be our highest priority.
