September 30th marks International Recovery Day, a global celebration recognizing recovery from addiction and the many pathways people take toward healing and wellness.
International Recovery Day brings together individuals, families, friends, allies, and communities around the world to celebrate recovery, share hope, and remind others that recovery is possible. The annual event recognizes that there is no single pathway to recovery and invites people from all recovery journeys to participate.
What You Can Do
Celebrate recovery:
Share a message of hope, celebrate someone in recovery, or recognize your own recovery journey.
Help reduce stigma:
Use person-first, non-stigmatizing language and imagery when talking about addiction and recovery. Words matter, and changing how we talk about addiction can help create more supportive communities.
Share resources:
Help connect individuals and families with evidence-based information, treatment and recovery supports, and local resources.
Listen and learn:
Make space for people with lived and living experience to share their stories and perspectives. Recovery looks different for everyone, and listening can help build greater understanding.
Join the global celebration:
Visit International Recovery Day to learn more, participate in the September 30 celebration, and launch a virtual “Recovery Firework” in recognition of recovery.
Together, we can celebrate recovery, elevate lived and living experience, and help create communities where people feel supported rather than stigmatized.
