Join us for a Heat Pumps 101 webinar on July 29th, 2026 from 12-1pm, in partnership with Green Energy Consumers Alliance. Whether you’re a tenant, first-time home-buyer, or a landlord, heating eats up a big part of your budget. And with summer temperatures rising every year, air conditioning is becoming more essential and a bigger financial concern. Heat pumps provide both heating and cooling and they do it without needing to burn fossil fuels that contribute to climate change. With the various incentives available, heat pumps can be more cost-effective than other options. If you’re facing a choice on your heating, perhaps your oil tank is on its last legs, or your boiler or furnace needs more repairs, now is the time to learn about the benefits of heat pumps.

The webinar will present on the following topics:
•       Heat Pumps 101: What they are and how they work
•       Costs and benefits
•       Special considerations for landlords and tenants
•       Latest info on state rebates, including dedicated funds for low/moderate income residents

Do you want to reduce your energy bills? You and your landlord may be eligible for free money. Planning an upgrade for your rental unit? Stretch your dollars further.
The City of Somerville invites landlords of Somerville based rental units to apply for an expanded and re-opened microgrant program supporting energy upgrades to rental units. If you were not eligible before, the tenant income limit increased so you may qualify now.
Your rental unit could receive an extra $2,000 to help pay for home energy upgrade projects.  Successful applicants own a rental unit in a 2- to 4-unit building and have tenants with income less than 100% of Area Median Income.
Projects include weatherization (insulation and air sealing); high efficiency appliances including washers, dryers, and induction stoves; air-source heat pump HVAC systems; heat pump hot water heaters; and electrical upgrades needed to support these.
Apply today: somervillema.gov/ses

Starting on July 1, 2026, it will cost 35¢ per kWh to charge at a standard station and 50¢ to charge at the new Fast Chargers. This helps the City to cover the rising cost of electricity, stay in line the charging costs of our neighboring communities, and continue to help fund the installation and maintenance of future stations.  Learn more at somervillema.gov/electric-vehicles

Thank you all for your support and participation in SustainaVille Week 2026. We had six incredible events and over 400 attendees that spanned topics from home energy efficiency and composting, to celebrating community climate action. We were able to partner with community groups and City departments to showcase the breadth of climate action happening in Somerville. The success of these events was in no small part due to this deep collaboration. Thank you!

Somerville Community Choice Electricity is the City’s official electricity supply program, which provides stable electricity pricing for Somerville residents.
In July 2024, the Department of Public Utilities issued new rules for aggregation plans. These guidelines expand local authority and increase public transparency. The revisions proposed for Somerville’s aggregation plan ensure that the City’s plan aligns with the new guidelines.
