Hardin County received some good soaking rain overnight, but not enough to offset the extreme drought conditions that exist. We need additional rainfall countywide, and thereโ€™s more rain in the forecast today through the next few days with the forecast for Wednesday being similar to yesterdayโ€™s.

I assure everyone the Burn Ban will be cancelled as soon as itโ€™s safe to burn again! In the meantime, please continue to refrain from outdoor fires.

Thank you and Stay Safe!

Good morning!

I am sharing this graphic from Greg Bostwick showing a snapshot of sleet, freezing rain, and rain anticipated around daybreak tomorrow.

All preparedness activities ahead of Winter Storm Fern should be completed today, and I recommend doing so by dark. Temperatures are falling and will continue doing so throughout the day.

Travel will become dangerous sometime overnight and remain that way through tomorrow or longer (worst case scenario, through Tuesday). I recommend staying off the roads after this eveningโ€”Iโ€™m not going to put a time on that, but as a rule of thumb, I plan to stay off the roads after the temperature reaches about 39ยฐ due to ice forming on overpasses and bridges soon thereafter (structures freeze faster - air circulation above and below them causes loss of heat faster than ground level roadways).

See my earlier posts from this week for preparedness tips. Follow our Hardin County Emergency Management page for more information. I will be posting additional information here periodically throughout the day and the days ahead.

Bottom line here is: Prepare for the worst (widespread power outages that could last a while, extreme cold temperatures with wind chills in single digits at times, falling limbs and power lines due to heavy ice and winds gusting into the 30s!), while praying for the best. ๐Ÿ™

โ„๏ธ Hereโ€™s where we are on the Winter Storm Planning Timeline, โ€œA Few Days Outโ€.

๐Ÿ’ง Prepare to shut off and drain sprinkler systems by Friday.

๐ŸงŠ Properly winterize exposed pipes/plumbing to prevent damages.

๐Ÿถ Pets/Livestock will require proper shelter to protect from the cold temperatures and wind chills.

๐Ÿชด Plants will require maximum freeze protection.

๐Ÿงฅ Plan to dress warm, and limit outdoor exposure during the freeze. Windchills will be in the teens or lower.

โšก๏ธ Prepare for possible power outages which could be widespread and long lasting.

๐Ÿฑ Stock up on food and snacks.
*Only the normal amount of toilet paper should be required, so donโ€™t go crazy on that! ๐Ÿงป

๐ŸŽฏ All cold weather preparations should be completed by early afternoon this Saturday. The sooner the better!

๐Ÿ”ฅ FIRE DANGER STATEMENT ISSUED BY NWS FOR HARDIN COUNTY AND ALL OF SOUTHEAST TEXAS ๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿ’จ Strong gusty winds, moderately dry fuels, and low relative humidity are the conditions resulting in todayโ€™s FIRE DANGER โš ๏ธ

๐Ÿšซ Please refrain from burning today. I know itโ€™s cold and a nice fire seems like the thing to do, but it is not safe to burn today.

Thank you and stay safe!
