It's great to have the opportunity to cheer for the man who is always cheering for everyone else.
The Vermont Agency of Transportation Highway Safety Office honored Retired Lieutenant, now Assistant Judge, Kevin Geno with the 2026 Lieutenant Allen Fortin Lifetime Achievement Award.

A fitting tribute to the leader who began his law enforcement career in 1976, with the Rutland City Police Department, where he ultimately retired as Commander. He continued his public safety service as a Lieutenant with the Rutland County Sheriff’s Department. In 2026, Kevin was appointed by Governor Scott to serve as an Assistant Judge for Rutland County, a role through which he continues his longstanding commitment to the community.

Additionally he served the VHSA for over 15 years in many capacities, including the longest tenured Board Chair. This award, named for his late friend Allen Fortin, honors the two men who are regarded as the most inspirational and influential pillars of Vermont's highway safety community.

Join us in thanking Kevin Geno for 50 years of service- and his ongoing commitment to safety and justice.

CHITTENDEN COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE WARNS PUBLIC OF LAW ENFORCEMENT IMPERSONATION SCAM

The Chittenden County Sheriff's Office is warning the public about a reported telephone impersonation scam that occurred on October 23, 2026 involving an individual who identified themselves as "Deputy Carter" of the Chittenden County Sheriff's Office and attempted to verify an individual's personal information over the phone. The call was reported to the Sheriff's Office at which time it was confirmed that a "Deputy Carter" is not employed by this agency.

The Sheriff's Office has previously warned the public about scams throughout Vermont involving individuals impersonating law enforcement officers over the phone to obtain personal identifying information or fraudulently demanding money for bail or other legal matters. The public is reminded that deputies will not contact individuals by telephone to demand legal payments or to request verification of personal identifying information. We ask community members to take a moment before sharing personal or financial information with anyone they don't know, and to verify a caller's identity before providing any details.

This week is National School Bus Safety Week!

Over the past several weeks, the Chittenden County Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement agencies across the state have been promoting school bus safety. Our deputies in the Traffic Safety Division actively monitor school bus stops at various locations throughout the county, utilizing both marked and unmarked vehicles. Our hope is that these efforts result in zero violations and, most importantly, help keep our children safe.

Remember: Passing a stopped school bus can result in a $249 fine and 5 points against your driver’s license. Please watch for students walking to and from school, obey school bus safety laws, and always use caution around school buses.

With shorter days and Halloween just around the corner, more pedestrians may be out and about, and they can be harder to see. Please remember to:

Slow down and stay alert.

Watch carefully for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Use extra caution around school buses and bus stops.

Be especially mindful during early morning and evening hours.

Your choices behind the wheel can make a life-saving difference for pedestrians,
bicyclists, and everyone who shares the road.

Let’s do our part to protect our community and make sure everyone gets home safely!
