Vermont Wing - Civil Air Patrol Learn about what the Vermont Wing of the Civil Air Patrol does for Vermonters and America, and how you can help!

The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is the official volunteer auxiliary of the United States Air Force. The Vermont Wing of CAP, headquartered in South Burlington, consists of five composite squadrons (both adults and cadets), one senior member squadron (adults only), and a legislative squadron (legislative members only). Our squadrons are in South Burlington, Montpelier, Bennington, Rutland, and Springfield. We also have a flight at Norwich University for students in CAP attending the university. Vermont Wing has single-engine aircraft, vehicles, radios, direction finding, and various equipment, along with pilots, senior members, and cadets ready to serve Vermont with various CAP missions. Vermont Wing's Cadet Programs' mission is transforming youth into dynamic Americans and aerospace leaders. Vermont Wing's Emergency Services programs respond to natural disasters and emergencies, partnering with the State of Vermont, the Red Cross, and other emergency response groups to assist when Vermonters need our help. Vermont Wing's Aerospace Education programs provide engaging opportunities to learn about aerospace sciences, cybersecurity, and STEM.

When a friend was seriously injured in a bicycle crash, Silas stayed calm, recognized that the situation required immediate help and found an adult to call 911. His preparation, perseverance and clear thinking helped his friend until emergency personnel arrived.

“I see the importance of being prepared,” Silas said.

✈️ Training, Teamwork, and Hands-On Experience!

On Saturday, October 24, Civil Air Patrol’s Bennington Squadron hosted a multi-wing training exercise, bringing together cadets and senior members from the Vermont and Massachusetts Wings!

Throughout the day, members participated in aerial photography training and received instruction on the new RADO 5 requirements.

In the afternoon, 1st Lt. Joe Cordato led Bennington Squadron cadets on a three-mile hike up Mount Anthony, where they put their search and rescue skills to the test by practicing how to locate a simulated downed aircraft.

It was a fantastic day of learning, teamwork, and putting skills into action! Great job to all the members and cadets who participated!

✈️ Congratulations to C/Maj David Burch on His Cadet Wings Selection! 🎉

Vermont Wing is incredibly proud to announce that C/Maj David Burch has been recommended for the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Wings Program as one of just 24 participants nationwide!

At 17 years old, Cadet Burch serves as the Cadet Commander of Rutland Composite Squadron (VT009). A Rutland, Vermont native and senior at Rutland Area Christian School, Cadet Burch joined CAP at just 12 years old with a passion for aviation that continues to drive his goals.

Cadet Burch has been working toward earning his private pilot certificate for years, reaching an exciting milestone this past July when he completed his first solo flight! After graduation, he plans to attend college while pursuing a career as a professional pilot.

Beyond aviation, Cadet Burch is an active leader throughout Vermont Wing, serving on the Cadet Advisory Council, representing the Wing at National Legislative Day, staffing encampments, and supporting Wing activities such as the Adirondack Balloon Festival. His enthusiasm for CAP has even inspired his family to join, including his father, Chaplain Stephen Burch, and sisters C/SSgt Lauren Burch and C/A1C Adrianna Burch, with another sibling planning to join next year!

💬 “It has been amazing to watch Cadet Burch grow up in this program, and CAP has really given him opportunities he would not have gotten anywhere else. We are so proud of what he has accomplished, and I know he will reach the goals he set for himself as a 12-year-old cadet basic.” — Capt Joann Larson, Rutland Composite Squadron Commander

Please join us in congratulating C/Maj Burch on this outstanding achievement! His dedication, leadership, and passion for aviation are a wonderful example of the opportunities available through Civil Air Patrol's Cadet Program.

👏 Congratulations, Cadet Burch! Vermont Wing is cheering you on as you continue reaching for the skies!

🇺🇸 Community Support Makes a Difference!

The Bennington Composite Squadron recently received an incredible $5,000 donation from American Legion Post 13 to help offset the cost of new Air Force-approved uniforms for its cadets!

This marks the largest donation the squadron has ever received, and we are incredibly grateful for the Legion's generosity and commitment to supporting our cadets.

To show their appreciation, squadron members hosted American Legion Post 13 for a Chinese barbecue luncheon and presented commemorative plaques in recognition of their generous support.

This wonderful partnership highlights the strength of our local communities and what can be accomplished when organizations come together to support the next generation of leaders.

👏 Thank you, American Legion Post 13, for investing in our cadets and the future of Civil Air Patrol!
