📖❤️ The Stories We Carry: Your Story Matters!
Every life is full of stories worth telling. Stories about growing up in Appalachia, family traditions, first loves, hard times, good neighbors, and the people and places that made us who we are.
And we want to help you tell yours!
Join us for The Stories We Carry, a FREE community storytelling and writing series where you’ll learn how to turn your memories and experiences into stories you can share with family, friends, and future generations.
You don’t have to be a writer. You don’t need perfect spelling or beautiful handwriting. This class is for ALL ages and ALL abilities. You just need a story, and everybody has one!
We’re excited to welcome Humanities Scholars Cat Pleska and Michael Tierney, along with Jenny Keener, social worker and storytelling poet, and Colleen Anderson, songwriter and storyteller.
Together, we’ll explore the art of storytelling, help you find your voice, and encourage you to preserve the memories that make your life uniquely yours.
📚 Participants will also receive FREE Appalachian books!
📍 Upcoming Gatherings:
❤️ October 21 | 5:00–6:30 PM
Heart + Hand Outreach Ministries, South Charleston
❤️ October 22 | 5:00–6:30 PM
Big Ugly Community Center
These free gatherings will continue monthly through June 2027!
This wonderful opportunity is made possible with support from the West Virginia Humanities Council and Berea College Appalachian Fund.
We believe there is tremendous value in the stories of ordinary people. The grandmother who remembers life before electricity reached her holler. The retired coal miner. The mother who raised five children. The person who left Appalachia and came home. The neighbor who has lived a hundred different lives without ever leaving the county.
History isn’t just what happens to famous people. It’s what happens to all of us.
Come tell us your story. We want to hear it. ❤️
