Flood Watch - Eastern San Juan Mountains

A Flood Watch is in effect from Monday morning through late Tuesday night. Periods of heavy rainfall from a remnant tropical storm system will move across southwest Colorado starting Monday.

What this means: excessive runoff could cause flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying, flood-prone areas. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks.

This includes South Fork, Creede, and Wolf Creek Pass.

A few reminders to stay safe:
🔸 Never drive through flooded roadways. Turn around, don’t drown. Just a few inches of moving water can carry a vehicle away.
🔸 Move vehicles and equipment away from creeks, drainages, and low spots.
🔸 Stay alert to changing conditions, especially near burn scars where runoff moves faster.
🔸 Monitor later forecasts and be ready to act if a Flash Flood Warning is issued.

Please help us spread the word by telling a neighbor.

SWISS ROLL FIRE INFORMATION:

Fire behavior remains minimal on the Swiss Roll Fire following several days of moisture. Today, conditions will allow firefighters to continue preparation work along Quartz Creek Road (NFSR 684), including cutting brush, removing fire-weakened dead trees and reducing ladder fuels. This work reduces available fuels if the fire becomes more active again while also supporting long-term stewardship of the area.

Additional moisture is forecast over the fire area today (Saturday, Sept 19), followed by drier weather Sunday through Tuesday. As conditions dry out, smoke may once again become visible from portions of the fire.

While recent rain has significantly subdued fire activity, the Swiss Roll Fire is not “out.” Areas of heavy timber and other fuels within the fire perimeter can retain heat and continue to smolder. As those fuels dry and temperatures warm, smoke may again become more visible.

Firefighters will continue to monitor conditions throughout the weekend. Rain is currently forecast to return to the area beginning Tuesday night.

As a reminder, burned areas contain numerous hazards such as muddy slick roads that may be damaged or washed out, fire-weakened trees that can fall without warning, and burning stump holes that can cause serious injury if stepped into. We strongly encourage the public to avoid the Swiss Roll Fire burn area and continue to respect all road and trail closures.

Swiss Roll Fire morning update for Sunday, 9/13:

The San Juan NF Columbine Wildland Fire Module (WFM) inbriefed this morning (pictured) to join Elk Creek WFM on the Swiss Roll Fire. The Columbine module is drone-equipped, which will improve situational awareness on the fire, and allow for infrared detection, mapping, and more.

Two helicopters are also assigned to the fire, and are expected to work on the east edge of the fire to cool down hot spots and slow the fire's progression toward Quartz Meadow.

The fire experienced some growth yesterday due to outflow winds, and the current size is 777 acres.

The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control Multi Mission Aircraft, a specialized airplane equipped with mapping equipment, flew over this morning and provided updated acreage.

Saturday Morning update for the Swiss Roll Fire east of Pagosa Springs:

The fire had minimal growth overnight. There will be an infrared flight and a helicopter recon this morning to obtain updated acres, perimeter, and to scout more indirect options. Quartz Meadow Road is being considered for options to slow potential fire progression if needed. Winds are expected to be lighter today, and potential cloud cover by this afternoon would reduce fire behavior. No precipitation is forecasted until tomorrow, but as of now the fire remains in a remote area and is not threatening any structures or private inholdings.

Additional details will be provided as conditions change.
