Owls landing soon! Join Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT) on Saturday, October 17th (show times at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.) to see live owls from near and far. It’ll be a hoot!

Naturalists and Eyes on Owls founders Mark and Marcia Wilson will bring Eastern Screech-Owls, a Barred Owl, Barn Owl, Great Horned Owl, Spectacled Owl and Eurasian Eagle Owl. Learn all about the owls of North America, marvel at the unique features of these raptors of the night, then follow along in a hooting lesson.

Location: 204 Cultural Arts Building (204 Sisson Rd) in the auditorium.

Buy tickets in advance at harwichconservationtrust.org (click “Walks & Events”), or pay at the door (cash, check, and card accepted). Admission is $10 for ages 12-adult and $5 for ages 5-11 (not recommended for under age 5). Proceeds help HCT preserve land to protect woods, water, and wildlife – including our local owls!

Sponsored by The Cape Cod Chronicle.

Attention bluebirds: your new spring 2027 home is waiting at "The Hink," also known as the Hinckleys Pond--Herring River Headwaters Preserve. Harwich Conservation Trust volunteers recently installed 22 bird nesting boxes on the property, which has become a great habitat for our feathered friends after a recent eco-restoration project. A Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT) work crew installed a split-rail fence recently at a property on Gilbert Lane that was donated to HCT by the Kendall family. A fundraiser, led by Bobby Parr and HCT is underway to cover the cost of the fence, a wrought-iron bracket, post and a memorial sign that will honor the Kendall family for their generous gift. Purple martins, with their striking iridescent sheen, have become feathered celebrities at Harwich Conservation Trust's Robert F. Smith Cold Brook Preserve, where they have moved into a specially-designed gourd rack. Recently, martin fledglings were banded by master bird ba**er Sue Finnegan in an effort to better understand their migration patterns and longevity. The summer magic of fireflies in action was on full display during Harwich Conservation Trust's (HCT) first-ever Cold Brook Firefly Walk. Expertly guided by HCT volunteer walk leader Gerry Beetham, participants were treated to a great lightning bug show and intriguing info about their lifecycle. The event took place at HCT's Robert F. Smith Cold Brook Preserve, where a recent rewilding project added a half-mile All Persons Trail, restored 44 acres of wetland and a mile of stream habitat. A good bench, humble, patient and strong, is the quiet superhero of the trail. It stands ready for weary bottoms, pleasant chitchat and the chance to comfortably immerse yourself in nature.

There's a great new sit-spot at Harwich Conservation Trust's (HCT) Pleasant Bay Woodlands, installed by HCT AmeriCorps member Lillian Pogany and stalwart HCT volunteers. We think they picked out the perfect spot with a nice view, so see if you can find it when you visit this beautiful place.

And the next time you are relaxing and reflecting on a well-placed HCT bench, take a selfie–let’s call it a “benchie,” and send it to us! For details, click here: bit.ly/4uGA39Z.

Are you in the mood for a blast of color that will knock your socks off? Come on down to Harwich Conservation Trust’s (HCT) Robert F. Smith Cold Brook Preserve and take in the amazing yellow sea of coreopsis, now in bloom at the Preserve’s trailhead, which leads visitors to a half-mile wheelchair accessible All Persons Trail.

Also at the trail start is a blooming pollinator garden that was planted last year by HCT volunteers. To see a photo gallery of the coreopsis and sign up for a free Cold Brook tour that highlights the recent eco-restoration effort at the Preserve, click here: bit.ly/4uOTqhk.
