On August 31st, Long Creek Youth Development Center, in collaboration with Pathfinders, a reentry program operated by the Center for Justice and Human Dignity , hosted a whitewater rafting trip on the Kennebec River for seven residents with Three Rivers Whitewater Rafting Maine.🌊

The day provided youth with an opportunity to experience a new and exciting prosocial activity while exploring the Maine outdoors, challenging themselves in a positive environment.🌲☀

We are thankful to Pathfinders for their collaboration and commitment to providing meaningful opportunities for the youth at Long Creek. We look forward to future events that continue to make a positive impact.✨

Since April 2026, the A.R. Gould School at Long Creek Youth Development Center has been proud to offer students an exciting opportunity to explore the world of barbering! 💈

Taught by professional barber John Wiechman, the program combines classroom instruction with a hands-on approach to learning. Students develop technical skills involving shears, clippers, layering, and styling while also building important life and workplace skills such as customer service, creativity, and time management.

Students can practice their skills in Long Creek's Hair Salon, applying what they learn in the classroom into real-world practice.💇🏻‍♂️✨

Each quarter, students earn vocational education credits toward graduation. The response from students has been overwhelmingly positive, three students are continuing their education in Barbering II this term.📚

As they continue developing their skills and experience, students are working toward future opportunities, including the possibility of becoming apprentices in barber shops.💈
