At approximately 7:32pm last night Southampton Fire was alerted to a structure fire with explosions on Pequot Rd. X1 responded along with Engine 3, Engine 4, and A1 with duty crew and call personnel.
X1 arrived first on scene to find a truck repair garage fully involved and immediately requested additional crews from Westfield, Easthampton, and Holyoke.
Water supply was immediately established with nearby hydrants, Easthampton Arial was positioned over the fire applying water directly to the garage and surrounding area. Southampton, Westfield, and Holyoke crews positioned around the building with handlines and blitz fire to hit fire at all angles and areas the arial could not hit.
At one point during the operation, due to the draw from all the apparatus on scene on the water main on the road there was low water pressure. Westover and Barnes tankers were then requested for more water on the scene. By the time both tankers had arrived the fire was mostly under control and additional water supply was no longer needed.
Eversource was requested to cut power to building and HG+E requested to determine if there were gas lines there and to shut them off as needed.
Massachusetts Department of Environmental protection was requested and the Massachusetts Department of Fire Service Hazmat team were requested due to the diesel fuel, oil, from vehicles and miscellaneous chemicals in the garage. Mass DEP tested the water and checked the runoff for hazardous materials and determined water was safe. Hazmat tested air quality and determined air quality levels were safe as well.
The cause of fire is still under investigation and we have no additional information at this time. There were no injuries to report.
