Southern Pines Police Department Law Enforcement Agency As we are in our second century of service, we recognize and respect those tragedies of our early past.

From the Town of Southern Pines’ quiet beginnings on March 7th, 1887, with a population of fifty and in a time when the only law and order was a Justice of the Peace, the Southern Pines Police Department has emerged into what it is today: a modern, self-sufficient, full service law enforcement organization that is a model for others to emulate. The early portions of our department’s history were marred by some tragedies and included the presence of two departments (Southern Pines and West Southern Pines). Since then, our Police Department has progressively evolved by bringing technological advances to the forefront, providing highly qualified personnel who promote an efficient, well-run organization while maintaining strong ties that we share with the community we serve. As the evolution of our department has progressed from that first car, that first radio, that first computer, our proudest accomplishments have come from bringing in unique and knowledgeable people into our family, providing them the opportunities and training few departments our size can match, and meeting the needs and experiencing the successes our department exhibits today. We have always worked with our community and the citizens, and continue to do so, through our emphasis on the importance of relationships and with ongoing community outreach programs. In doing so we continue to strive to learn and grow in the present and to have those that will follow us in the future will be proud of our efforts and dedication we put forth today. The Southern Pines Police Department serves a community of approximately 17,400 citizens. The department consists of approximately 55 sworn, non-sworn and volunteer personnel, all of whom are dedicated to the enforcement of law and improving the quality of life in the Town of Southern Pines through a dedicated focus on public safety.

False Active Shooter Alert Prompts Law Enforcement Response at Moore Montessori School

Southern Pines, NC — At approximately 12:28 p.m. on October 19, 2026, the Southern Pines Police Department and Southern Pines Fire Department responded to Moore Montessori School, located at 255 S. May Street in Southern Pines, following reports of an active shooter at the school. The initial alert was inadvertently activated by a school staff member through the school’s mobile application. The notification was subsequently received by additional school staff members, resulting in multiple calls to the Southern Pines Police Department reporting a potential active shooter situation. School staff immediately took appropriate precautionary measures by placing the school into lockdown. Out of an abundance of caution, officers with the Southern Pines Police Department responded to the campus and conducted a thorough search of the school to ensure the safety of all students and staff.

No threat was identified, and there was no active shooter or active threat present on the school campus. The incident was determined to be a false alarm. Following the response, Southern Pines Police Department personnel conducted a debrief with the staff member who inadvertently initiated the notification, as well as individuals who contacted the Police Department to report the alert. These discussions were conducted to ensure the circumstances surrounding the notification were fully understood and to review the actions taken by everyone involved.

Due to the significant law enforcement presence at the school, including numerous marked and unmarked police vehicles, the Southern Pines Police Department believes it is important to provide accurate information to the community and prevent rumors or misinformation regarding the incident. Although this incident was determined to be a false alarm, it provides an opportunity for the Southern Pines Police Department and Moore Montessori School staff to participate in a collaborative after-action review. The purpose of this review will be to evaluate the response, identify any lessons learned, and ensure that established safety procedures continue to provide the highest level of protection for students and staff.

The Southern Pines Police Department appreciates the cooperation of Moore Montessori School staff and the community and remains committed to the safety and security of Southern Pines schools, students, staff, and residents.

Happy 6th Anniversary Chief!!!!

On Wednesday, September 30th, 2020, Chief Temme passed on the Chief's badge to Chief Polidori. During the presentation of the badge, Chief Temme presented Chief Polidori with a framed poem "The Badge" (posted below). This poem embodies what the badge stands for, for all who wear it.

Happy 6th Anniversary, Chief Polidori!
Southern Pines Police Department

The “Badge”®
It comes in many shapes and sizes
And over the bearer’s heart it stands
Representing honor, peace, order and dignity
Regardless of how small or great the demand.
It is awake all day and all night
For it can never sleep
It must be alert, willing and able
To protect the strong as well as the weak.
It shows no prejudice to any
It sees no color, race nor creed
For its justice stands for all
And its true bearer is a rare breed.
It has no fear of danger
And will move when it is called
Many have tried to conquer it
But its strength has survived them all.
It has been worn by many
And has caused much grief to some
Others have fallen honoring it
Yet other bearers are still willing to come.
So let the bearer of The Badge beware
Of the enormous burden it represents
Don’t tarnish it in any way
For The Badge and its true bearer are God sent.
